Wild Horses

Free Spirits

America's "wild horses" are mustangs, descendants of Spanish horses escaped or set free from Conquistadors back before the nation WAS a nation. When Native Americans first saw these beasts, they were amazed and probably a little afraid. These new creatures were foreign, yet beautiful and spirited. Eventually, horses became friends of the Native Americans and helped them improve their ways of life.

Mustangs still roam the Western states of America today. However, they need help in protection of their habitat so they will always be around for us to enjoy. Some organizations, such as the Bureau of Wildlife Management, have Adopt-a-Horse programs in which mustang population is controlled by allowing responsible people to take them into their care. By funding programs like these and being aware of the condition of the herds, the wild horses of America will be around for years to come.
