Although Santangelo placed third in Rookie-of-the-Year voting, his emergence as a one of the best utility players earned him a spot in the Expos' roster. This hustler plays every position but the battery but still has a tough time cracking the starting line-up.
His natural position is Shane Andrews' third base, and he will likely lose the battle for the final outfield job to new sensation Vladimir Guerrero, but Santangelo should still find at least 300 at-bats filling in wherever he is needed.
Santangelo's numbers will continue to improve. He reaches base often and found occasional power in his small 168 lb frame (.407 slugging percentage, 20 doubles). But he lacks sufficient defensive skills for a starter, and may not have the stamina to last a full 162-game schedule. He wore down during the stretch last season while filling in for Andrews who was on the DL.
Santangelo is another example of excellent drafting by the Expos. The Expos brass chose this switch hitter deep in the 1989 draft (the 20th round).
