<TITLE>A Horse is a Horse
A Horse is a Horse...
"But Nell, I love my horse!" ~D. Dooright

A broken song beneath the snow, the echo of a soaring joy,
a shape in the mist, a touch in the rain,
in wilderness you will come again. . .
you tell us what we used to know. . .
you speak of all the free wild things
whose ways were ours when the wind had wings.

The first horse evolved about fifty million years ago. It was called Eohipppus: "eo" is a Greek word for "dawn" and "hippus" is a Greek for "horse". Eohippus was the size of a small dog or fox.
The "second horse" in the evolutionary chain was Mesohippus which was about twice the size of Eohippus. It appeared about thirty-five million years ago. Mesohippus was the first "horse" to have three toes on each foot; the middle toe with a primitive hoof was larger than the lateral ones. Its skull was larger; its face appeared longer, its eyes were set further back and changes in the teeth were apparent.
About a million years ago, the genus Equus, the first of the "true horses", evolved. Originating in North America, it emigrated to Asia, Europe, Africa and South America by means of connecting land masses.
From it a variety of horses evolved . . .

Go Boy's Roan Bandit (Tennessee Walker)
(aka Bandit)

The first and favorite of four . . . He was a huge gentle giant (unless other males were around of course) fiesty, playful, lazy, energetic, loyal, fickle, strong, pampered, calming, exciting and a noble friend who is truly missed. I have fond memories of hours on end exploring the countryside together . . . long quiet rides along the banks of the Ohio River and through the Kentucky woods. He was always the first to spot a deer or some other critter who crossed our path. His favorite past time, of course, was grazing and bullying his stable mates (Ninja, Jilly-Can-Do and Puzzle Master).

Bathing a rather large horse can be a bit tricky!
Horse kisses can be sloppy too!

Childhood living, is easy to do.
The things you wanted, I bought them for you
Graceless lady, you know who I am
You know I have let you
Slide through my hands...

I watched you suffer, a dull aching pain
Now you've decided, to show me the same
No sweet vain exits, or off stage lines
could make me feel bitter, or treat you unkind...

I know I've dreamed you, a sin and a lie,
I have my freedom, but I don't have much time
Fate has been broken, tears must be cried
Lets do some living, after, we'll die

Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses,
We'll ride them some day
