Beloww is a list of some of the stuff I've learned to do, both in studio and in the field. This list was created and written by Mr. Devin Brown, but I use it since we've been in practically every TV production class together and have done the same things.


Studio Production Experience

Television Production 1
Television Production 2

Working in the University of Houston TV studios:
  • Producer - writing scripts, preparing a production package, and communicating what your vision is to the Director
  • Director - calling the shots in a production and keeping your crew under control (which is hard to do sometimes, believe me)
  • Assistant Director - keeping track of the show's run time
  • Lighting director - creating light plots and lighting the sets
  • Audio director - using studio audio mixer and controlling the show's audio (music and mics)
  • Technical Director - working a studio switcher
  • Chyron operator - creating character generated titles for a show
  • Tape Operator - making sure the magic that gets made is laid down on tape for future generations to see
  • Over 50 hours experience with studio cameras

Producing & Directing

Working in the studio and on the set of KUHT Channel 8 in Houston, Texas:

  • Directing a show to be aired in Spring 1998
  • Working with studio cameras at KUHT studios
  • In-Depth instruction on production from industry professionals
Spring 1998 internship at KUHT:

  • A further extension of all television production things I have learned so far, as well as exposure to even more information by the aforementioned industry professionals
  • Assisting in the production of a show (usually camera work) called Weeknight Edition, which airs twice a night, every weeknight
  • Technical directing for some of the pledge breaks, credit squeezes and all, as well as running camera
Presently Employed at KPRC, Houston NBC affiliate:
  • Production Assistant - In charge of separation and distribution of scripts, as well as creation of maps to be used in newscasts

Field Experience

Electronic Field Production

Working in the field (i.e. outdoor, on-location shoots, etc.); completely out of studio:

  • Director - producing and controlling the shoots on location
  • Cameraman - working with professional Hi8 and Betacam cameras
  • Lighting Director - lighting field shoots
  • Audio - micing talent and riding audio levels in field situations
  • Logging Time/Gaffer - doing whatever else needed doing

EFP also provides one with the experience and knowledge into the pre-production process and how to prepare for a successful field shoot.


Producing & Directing

  • Further experience directing EFP projects
  • Further experience as cameraman using Betacam camera

Editing Experience

  • Various amateur projects on VHS, 8mm and Hi8
  • One project for TV2 edited on 3/4" U-Matic
  • Two projects for EFP edited on Hi8
  • Two projects for EFP and two for P&D edited on Betacam SP
