Johannesburg in the first week of May.

SYNOPSIS:
African Tears is the story of a white farmer in
Zimbabwe living side by side with war veterans for 7 months, under constant
scrutiny and intimidation. Make-shift homes were erected on the grazing
fields and their stock dams and timber plantations were “liberated”. Weekly
war councils were held on their farm. The family was left emotionally broken,
psychologically crippled and driven to the brink of bankruptcy. They and
their farm labourers were harassed and tortured, their live stock killed,
their fields roamed by packs of hunting dogs and the farm – eventually
burned to the ground. It remains undesignated, unlisted and not required by
the government for compulsory acquisition. It chronicles the hardships felt
by many Zimbabwean farmers and their families and tells of the destruction
of the country’s economy, collapse of tourism and ruination of agriculture. AUTHOR: Cathy Buckle was born in Zimbabwe in
1957, she is one of five children; her mother was a lecturer in teaching
training and her father a lawyer, heavily involved in human rights. Cathy
has a diploma in social work and a City and Guilds librarianship
certificate. She worked as the head children’s librarian at Harare City
Library after independence and then moved to a career in counselling and
teaching. She has always been passionate about wildlife and conservation
education. This passion drove her to a small game park where she worked for
10 years as the estate manager. After a brief time on Fothergill Island she
went back to her roots where they bought a farm in Marondera, where they
stayed until the farm invasions. She is now going back to counselling and
academic support teaching. Cathy has been married for 20 years and has an
8-year-old son. She has written four children’s books and published many
