REMINDER - The following account of 5 Bakti 98's experiences and important events are based solely on the students' personal experiences. The explanation may be a little bit elaborate and focused towards 5 Bakti 98.
So, don't drift off to sleep while reading it.... :)
Also, bear in mind that 4 Bakti 97 is 5 Bakti 98, only a year younger.

Floating Class Experience

Lack of classrooms in SMKSJ had forced 4 Bakti 97 to 'float' in the middle of the year, that is to wander around the school and going into empty classes to study. Most students dreaded their class to float because they fear that they might lose concentration on studying as they move about on every lesson. However, 4 Bakti 97 managed to live through it and even turned the experience around for its own advantage.

Here are some of the top reasons why floating class was the best for us :
  1. We didn't have a permanent seat in class. So, we will have a chance to sit wherever we prefer during every lesson.
  2. There were no more sweeping the class or wiping the windows. The whole class would just move in, make a mess, and move on.....
  3. The entire class could make do with some exercise in walking around the school after every lesson - at least nobody would sit until their legs cramp...and it would help build muscular legs too :)
  4. We would have a good reason in entering a class late. We'll just say "The teacher won't let us out yet". At least, nobody knows the truth.
  5. It would be a good chance for us to catch up on the latest gossip or just have wonderful talks to our classmates when we were on the move.
  6. Teachers won't be able to locate our position anymore.
  7. It would be a good opportunity to 'ponteng class', but why would any Baktian do so?
  8. We got to experience all sort of classes...such as :
    1. Classes with holes on the floor;
    2. Classes with funny sounding fans;
    3. Classes with no doors or windowpanes left;
    4. Classes with undescribable grafitti everywhere.
Well, nothing is perfectly good....There were also some bad points about floating class :
  1. We always have to be alert at the end of each lesson because we have to pack our bags and rush to the next class to book a good seat. If not, we would end up sitting in a corner, not able to listen to anything the teacher was saying....
  2. Sometimes, we had to wait like silly fools outside a classroom for the next lesson because the the students of the class haven't finished their lesson yet.
  3. Climbing up and down the stairs may seem to be a good exercise...but doing it every hour or so may just seem to be a big tiring chore.
  4. The subject representatives have to rush around finding for lost teachers unable to locate our classroom.
Anyway, the good seemed to outnumber the bad points. So, the floating class experience actually does more good to 4 Bakti 97 because it left a sweet memory for all of us. Thumbs up for floating class !

Inter School Choral Speaking Competition

The Choral Speaking Competition was the most memorable event ever to have been experienced by all the Baktians. It proved to strengthen the co-operation and understanding between fellow classmates of 4 Bakti 97, not mentioning giving the whole class something fun and challenging to do other than the normal schoolday routine.

School Level - SMK Subang Jaya

The whole exciting experience started when the school organises a choral speaking competition for some of the classes, including 4 Bakti 97. The first thing for us to do was to select a suitable poem to be read during the competition. After many selections, we finally chose Roald Dahl's version of Little Red Riding Hood. The reason? It was funny and easy enough to recite.....
The day of the competition finally came after many hours of practice. The practice was usually done during our free period or our English period behind the school bengkel. The place was quiet and perfect for our practice. On the competition day, everyone of us Baktians performed confidently on stage amidst shaky legs from some of us....and we put on an extra show by bowing in a wavelike manner before starting the choral speaking. Anyway, we were confident to excel, and we truly won ! That meant that we would be able to continue the competition in the next level, and at last we could go to another school for the competition....

Zone Level - SM Bandar Sunway (25 June 1998, Wednesday)

We went on practising for our next challenge in the choral speaking competition. Although some minor complications arose during some of the practice, we still managed to be able to go through the whole ordeal. One of the drawback for the competition was that we were required to wear the original school uniforms and not the prefects or the librarian's uniform. Well, it didn't quite bother us, but all the prefects and librarians have to search through their wardrobe for their old school uniforms and hope that they fit.......
On the day of the competition, the whole 4 Bakti 97 was whisked off to SM Bandar Sunway, the host for the competition, by a school bus. For all of us, it was exactly like a class trip, and we really cherished every single moment. Upon arrival of the school, we hang around at the canteen while waiting for the competition to start. When we finally got ourselves seated in the hall (which was actually 4 or 5 classrooms joined together), we noticed that the ceiling for the stage has an unusually low beam across. The low beam was really funny as it hid all the faces of the students standing on the top row...:) When we arranged ourselves on the stage, everyone's faces on the top row was hidden by the low beam, as expected....
Nevertheless, we performed quite well during the choral speaking when compared to the other schools. The only rival we guessed we have was SM Subang Utama (to all the Baktians, you all should know how they performed that day :-Þ ).
Finally the results were announced and we were disappointed to learn that we were the runner-up to SM Subang Utama. Although we didn't quite make the mark that we anticipated, we still enjoyed the whole experience. We went back to school beaming with pride that we were able to represent the school up to this level. It was a day worth keeping in our memories forever, as it symbolises our class' unity, friendship and true spirit in any competition.

District Level - SM Taman Petaling (2 July 1998, Wednesday)

We didn't actually thought that we would make it to the district level, but luck was on our side. The top three winners for the zone level was chosen to participate in the district level. Nothing could describe our feelings when we knew that we would be going to another school to perform choral speaking again for the third time.....And so, it was back to practice, practice and more practice. Finally, the day of the competition came and the venue was in SM Taman Petaling (an all girls school). We were again taken to the school by a school bus like a bunch of tourists. Imagine, 2 class trips in just one month! On that day, nobody thought about winning the competition anymore. The only thing on each and everyone of our minds was to enjoy the whole trip.
SM Taman Petaling was a nice school situated on a hilltop. The hall was a bit open air...with grills all over. It made us felt like prisoners in a jail...:) But the stage was a lot better than the previous school. At least, it was quite big with no low beams or anything like that. As we looked around, every participant we saw there looked like professional choral speakers....or so we imagined. Our turn to perform was quite at the end of the line, due to drawing lots. So we got to witness most of the schools performed choral speaking. And they were good....By the time our turn came, we felt no hope of ever winning but we still put on a great choral speaking performance, perhaps the best of all our previous performances. The results were announced and we didn't make it to the top three. In our hearts, we secretly agreed that we got the fouth placing out of the 12 schools there.
We didn't go back to school yet as the competition ended. We went to the canteen and found out that the food was great.....However, the bus came quite early and we have to get on the bus back to school. Some of us haven't even finished our food at the canteen yet!

On the way back, we felt proud of our achievements so far although we didn't win. And we were as proud to have represent the school up to this level as actually winning the competition. We realised that winning isn't the only thing in any competition. It's the spirit. We managed to practice and do almost everything about our choral speaking by OURSELVES....4 Bakti 97. In the end, we worked as a team and win (virtually) as a team. And we finally learnt more about friendships and about ourselves too, thanks to the choral speaking competition.
