At the turn of the century, Buckley was the hub of bustling lumber activity. Now an annual celebration commemerates this heritage with an amatuer logger's competition in June. Visitors can peruse the logging and turn-of-the-century life displays at the Foothills Historical Society, while enjoying the historic, photogenic buildings and shops in the downtown area. Wilkeson and Carbonado are where men once dug black diamonds from the ground, coal, from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Beyond Carbonado, a summer only highway leads along the Carbon River into the northwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park.
