Home of the Tacoma Rainiers (formerly Tacoma Tigers), a Triple-A Professional Baseball member of the Pacific Coast League since 1960 and affiliate of the Seattle Mariners Baseball Club. Located three miles west of downtown Tacoma and 20 miles south of Sea-Tac Airport. Outdoor stadium with grandstand and bleacher seating. Natural grass field, major league-size scoreboard, concessions, parking, and low prices make the ball park a great family entertainment value. In May 1994 Sunset magazine dubbed Cheney Stadium one of the best places on the West Coast to watch minor league baseball. The City of Tacoma constructed Cheney Stadium in 1960 to be the premier outdoor baseball stadium in the Puget Sound area. In 1989 it underwent a major remodeling and added 2,800 new bleacher seats. In 1990 a new field lighting system was installed. Most recently in 1995, Cheney Stadium has added the On-Deck Club, which includes a new VIP viewing deck with hot tub. The stadium also was repainted in the Rainier's new colors: navy, teal, and gray. Cheney Stadium can seat more than 10,000 people in a variety of seating sections, including box seats, reserved seats, and general admission (covered and uncovered seating). The Tacoma Rainiers play a 144-game Pacific Coast League schedule annually, with 72 games played at Cheney Stadium. Some of America's greatest names in professional baseball have played there: Alex Rodriguez (1996 American League MVP runner-up) and Hall of Famers Gaylord Perry, and Willie McCovey. Cheney Stadium has drawn national and international attention over the years. The 1989 World Champion Oakland Athletics highlighted the 1990 Pacific Coast League season with an appearance during spring training. It was the first time in the 31-year history of PCL baseball in Tacoma that world series champs had played at Cheney Stadium. Also in 1990, Cheney Stadium hosted baseball competition for the Goodwill Games. Countries from around the world sent teams to Tacoma to compete in this Olympics-style sporting event. Other sports activities and special events are also staged inside Cheney Stadium's facilities, including softball, amatuer baseball (high school, college, and semi-proffesional), summer recreational programs, concerts, circuses, car rallies/car shows, and training programs.
