*Swee'pea's Memorial to the Team
Formerly Known As The

Hartford Whalers

Welcome to my Whalers page! I used to and will always be a Hartford Whalers fan. Unfortunately, they are no longer here in Hartford. They are now known as the Carolina Hurricanes and play in North Carolina. So, in tribute to my Whalers, here are pictures of my husband, friends, and family with some of the Whalers players, along with pictures from the last open practice, which was held the day before the last ever Whalers game, and pictures from the actual game on April 13, 1997. If you happen to be a Whalers fan, I hope you enjoy the pictures, and please, try not to cry on your keyboard. We don't want it shorting out, now do we?

Guy and Irene

This is my friend Guy (left) and me at the last Whalers game. It was a very sad day for all of us.

This is center ice at the Hartford Civic Center on game day. The writing says it all.

GamePractice

This is the team practicing right before the game started. I've never seen so many white shirts around the rink at one time.

This is my friend Guy with another friend, Kenny. Kenny used to run the Fan Interactive games with me before every home game (see below).

Guy and Burkie

This is my friend Guy (right) and Whalers goalie Sean Burke (left). He was voted Most Valuable Player by the team yet once again this season, and February '97 Defensive Player of the Month, Road Warrier, and Most Valuable Player by the Booster Club. He also lead goalies on the team with the most shutouts. Thanks for the memories, Sean!

This is my husband Dean (left) and Whalers Captain and classiest Whaler ever Kevin Dineen (right). This picture was taken at the Booster Club Awards Banquet in March of 1997 where he was voted October '96 and January '97 Offensive Player of the Month, Favorite Whaler, and Mr. Hustle because he always gave 100%, healthy or injured. It was fitting that he scored the last ever Whalers goal on April 13, 1997. He will definitely be missed.

And this is Kevin receiving the Mr. Hustle award by Arnold Dean, a local radio announcer and long-time Whaler friend.

This is Keith Primeau. What can I say about Keith? We got him at the beginning of last season for Brendan Shanahan (booooo!). That was the best trade we ever made, more than getting Shanahan for Chris Pronger! Keith was voted December '96 Offensive Player of the Month and was voted Newcomer of the Year by the Booster Club.

This is my niece Tanzia and Whalers forward Sami Kapanen. He was voted February '97 Offensive Player of the Month by the Booster Club, and is my niece's favorite player. Nice of me to get her involved just to have it ripped away from her, eh?

Geoff Sanderson

This is Geoff Sanderson at the last practice. He was voted November '96 Offensive Player of the Month and Best Forward by the Booster Club. He is my favorite player and the player's jersey I have that is autographed, which is now a collector's item. But at least it's mine.

STUUUUUUU! That is what everyone used to yell every time this man set foot on the ice. This is Stu Grimson, also known as The Grim Reaper. Boy, can he beat the livin' snot out of anyone that gets in his way?!? Just ask Shayne Churla of the Rangers. (hehehe) Stu was pretty much the enforcer on the team, and was voted Unsung Hero by the Booster Club.

Kent Manderville

This is another of my favorite Whalers, Kent Manderville. Here, he is receiving the Unsung Hero award (not from the Booster Club) which he RICHLY deserved. This guy came in to training camp as a free agent tryout and ended up being one of the best players on the team. Watch for this guy in the future!

This is my friend Guy with my niece Tanzia. This was taken at one of the last games of the season. See what kind of friendships are made at hockey games? You just never know.

Guy and Tanzia
Terri & Kids

This is my sister Terri and her kids, Tanzia and Corwin. This was taken at the last practice. It's a good thing her husband Mike took the picture then, rather than later when we were both crying our eyes out.

This is the game that I used to run, called "Slapshot for Accuracy." I loved running it, especially with little kids trying to win a prize. I sure do miss it.

Tanzia

This is my niece, Tanzia, after the game. Those tears were real for most of us when the game ended.

And this is the "Chuck's" crew, a restaurant we always went to after every game to toss back a few cold ones. Ahh, those were the days.

Chucks

And last of all, the team. What can I say but they will be missed by Whalers fans everywhere, and we will always remember them, good or bad. They may have taken the team out of Hartford, but they'll never be able to take our memories away.
