Why the Prince Willy mania?

Written December 12, 1997

With all of the media attention Prince William has been receiving lately, you have to wonder....why? If you saw him walking down the street, he would look like a regular 15 year-old boy who wears braces on his teeth, likes the Spice Girls, Pulp, going to discos with buddies, and having a drink or two every once and a while. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Wrong. He is Britain's future monarch, and is the son of quite possibly the most famous woman of our time. William has been thrust into the limelight more so now, than ever. Since the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales this past summer he has appeared on countless magazine covers, in newspaper articles, and tv specials. Now, the world embraces him as a glorious memory of her; his looks are a constant reminder. Another aspect of his appeal is that almost any girl would love to be swept of her feet by a handsome prince, and become a princess or ultimately Queen of England. You know, the "Cinderella complex." He is the stuff dreams girls' dreams are made of.

Yet, with all of this interest, we know barely anything about him. So what if his so-called favourite foods include burgers and fries? So what if he like fast cars? We grasp onto these superficial facts because we truly don't know him, his personality, or his life behind the palace walls. And that's why we snap up the first magazine with an article about him, or spend hours searching the internet for new info on him. But, I ask you, what is this person we have come to know of as 'Prince William' really, truly like?
