Died - At his home, near Zion Seminary, Miss., December 10th, 1896,
William Lewis Moore. Mr. Moore, the son of John Moore and Eleanor
Oliver, born February 20, 1838, in Dallas county, Alabama, near Pleasant
Hill. The family and relatives moved from Tennessee, and all were
instrumental in organizing a Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hill, of which
William Moore, Sr.1,
was pastor as long as he lived. Mr. Moore was married October 11,
1857, to Mary C. Hesler, daughter of Martin Hesler. [In] 1857, Mr.
Moore moved to this State, His mother was a Presbyterian, [and] he was
baptized in infancy and her earnest wish was that he should belong to the
church she so much loved. He did not unite with any church until
30 years of age, when he joined the Methodist, his wife being of that faith.
The special prayer of his mother was not fulfilled until late in life.
No Presbyterian Church being near to him until, in the [pro]vidence of
God, Synod took up the Home Mission work, and then the prayer of this mother
was fulfilled. It was through Mr. Moore and Rev. [?] Chandler that the
Zion Church was organized and he was elder in this church, and the progress
Zion Church has made is largely due to his [fid]elity. Brother Moore
was for several years an officer of the County Sunday-school Association,
and as soon as the Zion Seminary school house was convenient he started
a Sunday-school, he and his family, he said, ["w]ould be a Sunday-school."
He was faithful in this as long as he was able to go, though for almost
a year previous to his death he was unable to attend. His advice
and counsel to those who came to him were [a] great good in the community.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and eight children, and his earnest
wish was that they all might be [fai]thful in the service of God.
His truest confidence in God were (sic)[alw]ays firm and he was ready to
say: " It is all for the best;" "and [we] know that all things
work together for good to them that love God,
[to] them who are called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28.)
