During the summer of 1995 I discovered an online game that has since become somewhat of an addiction. It’s called a MUD, or Multiple User Dungeon. There’s a great FAQ for people who have no idea what I’m talking about on mudconnector.com. In fact, that site is a fantastic gateway to all things MUD. I’ve played several of these text-based games over the years, including starting out on the original CrimsonMUD, moving to CrimsonII, then CrimsonIII, even dabbled a bit in NachoMUD. Most of these are now gone or so changed that I wouldn’t even recognize them. I settled into a particular one in late 1997/early 1998 and have stayed ever since. I’m talking about Rivers of Mud, or ROM. It’s the original ROM MUD and just a fantastic place to play. That beautiful lady you see to the right is my character, Marta. Isn’t she fantastic? The portrait was done by my best friend back in 2000. I don’t think I ever thanked her enough for it. Marta is one of the more interesting characters on ROM. She’s ancient by most standards, but as an elf, 147 years isn’t that old. Marta subscribes to the arts of dark magic per the orders of her deity Arawn. In fact, she’s one of the most powerful dark mages or necromancers around. Marta is always being pressured to become better by her deity, her peers, the local immortal crowd, and of course herself. Maybe someday she’ll stop falling off cliffs or walking into dragon lairs. Maybe. Want more information on what Marta does for the MUD? Check out the following links! In fact, I would expect more to arrive soon.
