~Softbreeze~ Home Page Helper

This page is devoted to anyone who needs to get a home page off the ground. My page has been up since January '97 and I have collected a lot of links that have helped me. There are thousands of pages with tens of thousands of graphics, backgrounds, bars and buttons! I have looked at what seems like a million! Music, different fonts, color and on and on…Your job is to learn everything you'll need for a great page. Here are some starting points and many of them have links to take you further. You will learn how to put it all together from people who have taken the time to write tutorials from beginner to advanced html. But above all enjoy yourself!! Surf around and see what's out there and make great pages!

This html helper is divided into four parts. This first section is general information. The others are:

Color for Your Page
Music for Your Page
Images for Your Page

There are a few things that are very important to remember. One is to respect the copyrights of others. These people are making graphics that are free for anyone to use on a non-profit page. If people abuse the privilege these graphics might not be available to us for free. Most of the time all they ask is a link back to their page. It's not a lot to ask. Some ask you to send an e-mail letting them know where their things are being used. Again this in not much to ask. Sometimes you will see they have a background or other things like special music that someone has written for them to use. Respect their right to exclusive use of these things. Most willprohibit use in other collections without permission.

Another problem is linking to their servers. Most of these pages get a lot of hits in the normal course of things and if you're linking to their pages for the use of graphics or music then you are putting extra strain on their servers. You should also know that most of these people have the ability to track your IP addie. Some will even take steps against you. Most of them have paid to have the disk space they need for graphic or music intensive sights. If you link them you also run the risk of them changing the things you are using. You could end up with something you had not planned on either intentionally or by accident. Download it to your own hard drive and then upload it to your page editor. If you don't want it to keep it on your hard drive you can then delete it. It has to be uploaded to your page server before it can be seen on your page anyway. If you don't have enough space for all of your graphics then it's up to you to buy more like everyone else. Again remember these people don't have to give these things away and they sure don't have to be treated unfairly. **

Web Space
You'll need a place for your page. Below are several links where you will find free space. Usually they will give you 2 meg and the option to buy more space when and if you need it. Depending on the amount of graphics you use you might not need to buy extra space. Of course you can buy your own domain too. But there are many advantages to using the site below. Most allow you to upload graphics easily without using FTP which can be confusing to a beginner. They may also have other member benefits that you won't have avalible on your own. So find the place you think you'll feel most comgfortable with and see what happens from there. You can always change if you're not happy where you are.

Fonts

Something I've started doing more and more is use different fonts. There are many fonts that come with your operating system and many more you can download. They come in handy for making your own graphic buttons or banners, logos etc. As I use different fonts for the text on my pages I'm including the name of the font at the bottom of that page and if possible a link where you can download it. At present I will be using free fonts or fonts that I have acquired from other programs. There are also shareware fonts that you must pay for. In any case I've added the font links below. More and more people are using other than the defaults for text and it's nice if you can view it that way too. Look at your browser fonts and see what you already have. Most people will be using things you already have. I've used Parkavenue BT, Ariel, and Comic Sans MS to name a few. Don't deny yourself the beautiful effects the page creators have made. On this page I've used Arial. When you download a new font you'll put it in your Windows fonts which you'll find in settings then control panel. Look and see what you already have. But don't worry if you don't have the text that is used on a page, you'll still be able to view the page, you'll see it in the default text.
