In Memory ~Dr. Benjamin Spock~ May 2, 1903-March 15, 1998 Dr. Benjamin Spock, the pediatrician who influenced millions of parents in the United States and around the world to raise their children with love and common sense died on March 15, 1998 at the age of 94. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut on May 2, 1903. Dr. Spock had suffered a heart attack, stroke and several bouts of pneumonia. Many parents considered his book "Baby and Child Care," first published in 1946, as the bible of parents in raising their children. "Trust yourself," he told parents. "You know more than you think you do." His idea was to let parents know that nothing about rasing children was written in stone and to trust themselves and their instincts. He knew that every baby was an individual and that what worked for one might not for another. He believed "to respect children because they're human beings and they deserve respect, and they'll grow up to be better people." His views were not always agreeded with by pediatritions. He was often accused of being "the father of permissiveness," and responsible. Spock said he never meant that children should be allowed to be uncooperative or impolite. How ever his ideas were thought of he made people look at triditional child rearing.
