Job Experience

I started out by giving my father a ‘helping hand’ in his company Telematics International during the late 1980s. My purpose then was to familiarise myself with the environment in which trading companies work.

My first experience with a multinational company was in June 1993, when I had joined the Finance Department of the American Express - Travels Related Services in Karachi, Pakistan.
My major projects for this company were:

  • To monitor the effect on customer purchases of Traveller Cheques and US Dollars in comparison to the Black Market, after Prime Minister Mr. Nawaz Sharif had imposed a 5 % tax on the purchases of Foreign Currency
  • Calculating American Express’s Contribution in Total Sales for certain destinations via PIA Flights
  • Forming an in-department resume sheet
The duration for this Internship was 8 weeks.

I did not do any Internships during 1994 because I was studying for my finals for the BCom exams.

In February 1995, I joined the Marketing Department of CitiCorp Investment Bank of Pakistan Ltd of CitiBank N.A.
Here my major projects were :

  • Preparing a target market list for issuing of Term Finance Certificates, Certified Term Finance Certificates, and Demand Promissory Notes
  • Calculating Financial ratios such as Interest Coverage, Cash Coverage, ROE, Current Ratio, Pre-tax and Post-tax margins, Leverage and Cash Cycles of target companies using Annual Reports and related information
  • Preparing a list of all Financial Institutions, Corporations, Charitable Institutions, Insurance Companies, Government Organisations, and other potential customers
  • Updating clientele records by keeping in touch with client companies
The duration for this Internship was 10 weeks.

My third Internship was in Reckitt & Coleman of Pakistan from February 1996 till April 1996. Here I had joined the Planning and Finance Department.
    My main responsibilities were:

  • Budgeting and Standard Costing in my capacity as an ICMA Part 3 qualified
  • Report Writing
  • Assisting the Planning Department in preparing presentations for the Management
  • Identifying Cost Departments and allocating costs to those centres
The duration for this Internship was 13 weeks

    My Favourite Sports

I call myself the jack of all sports. Cricket ranks as my favourite sport and I played for my school team back in Ordinary levels. Table Tennis has stuck like glue ever since I started playing the game in class 9. Even now, in LUMS, there’s nothing like a tough game of Table Tennis to cheer me up. Other favourite sports are Swimming and Volleyball. I recently participated in the LUMS Volleyball championship and hurt more fingers than I ever have before !!!! I’ve played a bit of Field Hockey, Soccer and Basketball for my school before my O’ level examinations. Have also played Squash in a local club.

    Life at LUMS

How does 140 hours a week sound like to you? That’s 20 hours a day !!! And that is for how long we study at an average !! Guess what our teachers have to say about this… they say if we find sleep for more than 2 hours… they aren’t giv ing us enough work !!!
