Friday:

Johnson found he should have plenty of depth this season after both his A-team and B-team finished tied for first place after the opening round of the annual Memorial Fall Classic. The two squads posted identical 319 scores at Victoria Country Club to hold a two-shot advantage over San Antonio Churchill going into today's final round at Colony Creek Country Club. Churchill, the defending champion, finished at 321, while Corpus Christi King was fourth at 330, followed by Corpus Christi Ray at 334 and St. Joseph at 339 "Going in I figured we would have to shoot around 310 to be leading so I'm kind of surprised to be leading it with a 319," said Johnson. But his biggest surprise may have come from his B-team which matched his first five's score after the opening round. "The B-team really did an exception job today to be tied for the lead," Johnson said. "Two of the guys on the B-team that shot in the 70s have been playing well, so I shouldn't have been that surprised because I knew they were capable of doing it." Evan Clark, the first-round leader with a 75, and Scott Nicol with a 79 paced the B-team, while Drew Andrews chipped in an 81 and Josh Schroeder an 84. Kyle Marek followed with a 93. Mat Hillyer led the Memorial A-team with a 77 and was in fourth place, while Ray Pucciarello added a 79 and was tied for fifth. Chris Pribyl posted an 81 and Bradley Bongers finished the team scoring with an 82. Erich Schneider chipped in an 84. "The A-team had a couple of guys who were not exactly thrilled with their scores today so I know they'll be out to do a lot better tomorrow," said Johnson. Churchill's Kyle Reeder posted a 76 and Juan Garcia-Ochoa added a 79 to lead the Chargers attack, while Dustin Deleon and John Caballero led King's attack with an 80 and an 82 respectively. St. Joseph stayed in striking distance behind the play of Jonathan Perez, who fired an 82, and Kevin Sandoval, who turned in an 84. They were followed by Chris Slovacek with an 86, Kyle Alexander and 87 and Jordan Brown a 91. The Memorial C-team was in eighth place with an opening-round 348. Cameron Joyner led the way with an 84 and was followed by Justin West (87), Nick Carillo (88), Matt Bridges (89) and Eric Graves (95). Playing as individual medallists, Memorial's Marcus Padilla posted an 86, while Will Marchbanks had a 92, Michael Garcia a 95 and Clint Cain a 107. St. Joseph's Philip Brown had an 85 and Brice Fikac a 96.

Saturday:
The Vipers fired a final-round 294 to hold off the San Antonio Churchill Chargers and unseat the defending champions. Memorial, which took a two-shot lead on Friday, never gave the Chargers an opportunity to surpass them, with three players finishing in the top six individually and increasing their lead over the Chargers by an additional stroke. Combined with an opening-round 319, the Vipers fired one of their best closing rounds ever to finish with a two-day 613 and the team title. Churchill followed with a 321-295-616. "I was real proud of the way they went out and handled the pressure," said Johnson. "I had some guys on the A-team that weren't pleased with what they shot on Friday and they came back and did something about it today." The Memorial A and B teams entered Saturday's final round tied for the lead, but the B-team slipped slightly, finishing with a 311 to take third with a 630. Corpus Christi Ray overcame Corpus Christi King for fourth with a 645, while King had a 647. St. Joseph finished sixth with a two-day total of 654 after slicing 24 strokes off their opening-day score. All five Memorial A-team players bettered their opening-round scores. Ray Pucciarello led the way with a second-place finish. Pucciarello fired a 1-under 70 to finish with a 149. Matt Hillyer and Chris Pribyl tied for sixth, as Hillyer fired a final-round 72 and Pribyl carded a 1-over 72. Erich Schneider added a 76 and Bradley Bongers finished with an 80. Ray's Oscar Pate took top individual honors firing an even-par 71 to go with an opening-round 76 and finished at 147. Kyle Reeder of Churchill and Dustin DeLeon of King finished tied for third with a pair of 151s. Scott Nicol paced the Memorial B-team with a 79-73-152 to finish fifth overall. Kyle Marek added a final-round 75, Josh Schroeder a 79, Drew Andrews an 84 and Evan Clark, the first-round leader, an 88. "We were looking for consistency from top to bottom along with some improvement and I think we got both," said Johnson. "This should give us a boost. To shoot numbers like that you can definitely build on it and the 311 the B-team shot will do the same for them." The Memorial C-team placed ninth with a 697. Cameron Joyner led the way with a final-round 85. He was followed by Matt Bridges with an 87, Justin West an 88, Nick Carrillo an 89 and Eric Graves a 94. Jonathan Perez, with an eagle at the par-5 18th, paced the Flyers to their sixth-place finish with a closing-round 72, as he finished tied for eighth with a 154. "That three by Jonathan on the last hole from about 40 feet was a thing of beauty," said Flyers coach Jack Lee. Perez was followed by Chris Slovacek with an 86-80-166, Jordan Brown a 91-76-167, Kevin Sandoval an 84-87-171 and Kyle Alexander an 87-92-179. "I was very pleased with everyone's scores," said Lee. "I think things look good for us this year." St. Joseph's Philip Brown and Brice Fikac playing as medalists turned in scored of 173 and 175 respectively. Marcus Padilla led four Memorial medallists with a 180, while Will Marchbanks had a 189, Clint Cain a 198 and Michael Garcia a 199.
