Other Adaptive Sports Opportunities

Competitive athletics available throught Sun Wheeler Sports can fulfill a personal need for strenuous activity, provide an outlet for competitive drive, enhance independence, and contribute to the athlete's overall health and well being.  The program offers a myriad of opportunities to build strength, confidence, and physical skills valuable in everyday life.  With all of these benefits come life-long friendships, shared victories, and exciting opportunities for national and international competition.  Here are some additional sports opportunities that are currently available or may be reactivated when the need is recognized and/or present within the community.

Road Racing: From the Hawaiian Iron-man to the local Shamrock Run, Sun Wheeler Road Racers have consistently placed in the top five.  In addition, Sun Wheeler Road Racers participate in more than ten local and regional races in support of many worthy causes.

Swimming: Swimmers participate in regional and national competition in accordance with the standards set by Wheelchair Sports, USA.  Swim practice is held in the Virginia Beach Recreation Center, which includes a fully accessible indoor pool and locker rooms..

Obstacle Course/Slalom: Participants at the Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Games may compete for time or just competion of the course.  This course typically pits the athlete against varied ramps, jumps, sand traps, logs, & snaking turns, both in a forward and backward propulsion. Athletes are penalized for touching cones or deviating from the course.

Rugby: This team sports for quadriplegics has evolved into one of the fastest-growing wheelchair sports worldwide.  To be eligible, a player must have an impairment in the upper extremities.  Rugby is a high-contact sport, played indoors on a regulation basketball court

WeightLifting: Weightlifting is comprised of two separate lifts: the Bench Press and the Powerlift Press. Athletes train on an annual cycle and compete in the regionals with the goal of qualifiying for the World Championships and the Paralympics. Weightlifting is governed by the United States Wheelchair Weightlifting Federation..

Table Tennis: Governed by the American Wheelchair Table Tennis Association and Wheelchair Sports, USA.

Billiards: Under the aspices of the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association,
