Other Adaptive Sports Opportunities Continued

Competitive athletics available throught Sun Wheeler Sports can fulfill a personal need for strenuous activity, provide an outlet for competitive drive, enhance independence, and contribute to the athlete's overall health and well being.  The program offers a myriad of opportunities to build strength, confidence, and physical skills valuable in everyday life.  With all of these benefits come life-long friendships, shared victories, and exciting opportunities for national and international competition.  Here are some additional sports opportunities that are currently available or may be reactivated when the need is recognized and/or present within the community.

Field: Field events include the shotput, discus, javelin, and club (Quadriplegics Only).  Athletes compete in regional and national track and field meets with the goal of qualifying for the Paralympics. There are both Junior and Adult divisions. Athletes qualify for nationalsin the Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Games held in Harrisonburg, VA.

Track: Track events include 60, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500. and the 5000 meter races.  Athletes compete in regional and national track and field meets with the goal of qualifying for the Paralympics. There are both Junior & Adult divisions. Athletes compete in the Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Games.

Water Skiing: Water skiers compete in the slalom, trick, and jump categories under the auspices of the Water Skiers with Disabilities Associatioin (WSDA). WSDA is a sports division of the American Water Ski Association.

Basketball:  Sun Wheelers Sports sponsors two teams, playing under the auspices of the over 200-team National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA)--The Sun Wheelers (Division II-Coed Team) and the Lady Sun Wheelers (Women's Team). Camps and Half-time shows are performed to increase awareness and recruit additional players to this sport that mirrors the NCAA Basketball rules.
