Play opens with Allan standing alone in a dreamlike surrounding. Suddenly, he feels a light tap on his shoulder. He turns around to see that it is his wife who has been dead for several years. Allan - I must be dreaming. Cheryl - This is as real as you make it, Allan. Allan - It's been so long since I've seen you. Cheryl - I know. I've missed you so much. Allan - how have you been? Cheryl - I'm as well as can be expected. You know, considering. Allan - I wish you were back home with Denise and I. We miss you. Denise thinks of you constantly. Cheryl - How has she been doing? Allan - She looks so much like you, Cheryl. She has your spirit in her heart. Cheryl - Allan, I want to see her. Show her to me. Allan - How can I do that? Cheryl - This is your dream isn't it? (A few seconds past. Then, from behind Cheryl, two arms embrace her around her sides. She turns to see her daughter, Denise.) Denise - Mom, is that really you? Cheryl - Of course, sweetheart. (A single tear rolls down Cheryl's cheek as she hugs Denise) My little angel, I've missed you so, so much. (Looking up at Allan) You've done such a good job, Allan. Allan - With your help, of course. It's been you all these years in my heart which helped me raise our daughter. All those times I felt that I needed motivation, it was you who lifted me up. The love for you and the love that we share for our daughter was always there to see me through. (Allan smiles as he walks over and puts his arms around his wife and daughter) It was you, Cheryl, you. |
