Xerri's Grotto was discovered in 1923 when the late Anthony Xerri was digging for a well.
At a great depth, he came across a deep dark hole. After clearing the debris in the cave for several years, he prepared with great care a concrete path around part of the area in order to allow the general public to visit the site. The work carried out in those early days can be appreciated today during normal hours any day of the week.
The Grotto is to be found at a depth of 9 meters and the entrance is via a spiral stone staircase.
