The Full Story of the pilot episode of Knight Rider : The Movie
Michael Knight started as Michael Long, a man with a weird early 80's perm. He was working as a detective tracking the movements of a couple of high-class 'thieves', who steal plans of superconductors or supercomputers and then sells them off. A blond bird named Tanya was working with Michael Long and agreed to infiltrate the gang. One night he and his back-up gang were attending a high-profile party watching the gang. Tanya herself went into the office with the plans on the computer and copied it onto a 5 ¼ inch disk. She then slipped it into her pocket. She made her way out of the door and got into a car with some of the members of the gang. Michael Long followed her on his own and got into his Trans AM and tailed her for a couple of miles. Tanya noticed this and stopped. She got out of her car, Michael Long got out of his car and Tanya took a silver gun out of her hand-bag, pointed it at Michael and shot him in the head at point-blank range. She then drove off. It would seem that she had 'defected'.
Next scene, Michael wakes up in a hospital, looking a little different. The bottom line is that, Michael Long had been shot in the head BUT a metal plate that was inserted in his forehead, due to an injury in the Vietnam war, had deflected the bullet, so averting major damage. But his face had been damaged beyond repair. He had been found by an official of the Knight Foundation and had been brought in. Using the cover of red-tape, they officially declared Michael Long dead, which meant that they could do with Michael as they liked. They used advanced plastic surgery to reconstruct him in the image of the owner of Knight Foundation's own son. So his bandages were removed and a mirror handed to Michael. "I don?t like it," was Michael's reaction to his new face.
In the time Michael lay in the hospital bed, a secret operation was happening in the Knight Industries factory. Using the Trans AM that Michael owned, they started to construct a car that will change the face of Police undercover work forever. The car's codename was the Knight Industries Two Thousand, KITT for short... KITT was a supercar, he was controlled by a revolutionary kind of CPU, one that allowed KITT to think like a human being, while having the advantage of NEVER making mistakes. The chip was as powerful as the most powerful computer at the time. The outside was made out of a special 'molecular shell' which meant that it could withstand bullets, grenades and even bazooka rockets!! The inside resembled a computer geeks' heaven. Hundreds upon hundreds of buttons are placed, each one with a specific function. Two monitors were situated on the passengers side, used to display maps or pictures or even video if the surroundings. The dashboard was all digital, with digital readouts of RPM and MPH. The steering wheel is not a circular design, but much like an aircraft steering wheel. The only indication from the outside that this car was a bit more than 'special' was the red lights situated on the front of the bonnet, where each lights in turn switched on and off and created a 'movement' from left to right to left and so on, sometimes accompanied by a eerie ghostly 'whoo-whoo' sound. The technical explanation is that KITT is 'scanning the surroundings'. But what must rank as the most outstanding of all features, is that KITT can actually TALK, using a graphical display which shows the waveform of his voice (look below for the picture).
Michael was visited by two important people, Mr Knight, the owner of Knight Industries, and Devon, one of the senior men in FLAG (Foundation for Law And Government). Devon explained, to Michael's dismay, that he was officially dead in the eyes of the law so they can do whatever they like with him. Under a secret agreement with the Knight Industries, they had Michael Long?s face reconstructed and FLAG will get a new 'supercar' for use by Michael Long. However, they didn't say why. Michaesl would find that out later. Michael initially felt peeved at a secret cover-up involving him and he tried to be as uncooperative as possible, however, even he found out that there was only so much he could do.
Later on, Michael was discharged from the hospital. He was summoned to Devon's office for an urgent chat. Mr Knight wanted to see him urgently regarding some VERY important business, so Devon took Michael to see Mr Knight. Mr Knight was on his death-bed, literally, with important news regarding Michael. He told him that he needs a successor for his company, and he needs someone to look after his new creation (the Knight Industries 2000, the 'supercar'). He then named Michael as the man. He then gave Michael a new identity. From now on, he was known as Michael Knight. He is to work for FLAG, and will be a secret detective using the new 'supercar', the Knight Industries 2000, KITT.
Michael was told to report to the big Knight Industries warehouse later on. He turned up and walked in. The place was completely dark. Then he saw a red light in the distance moving from left to right: whoo-whoo, whoo-whoo, the light went as it moved from left to right and left again, then the sound of an engine starting was heard before two headlights popped up beside the red light. A screeching of tyres was heard as the red and white lights moved closer and closer and closer until it stopped suddenly in front of his legs. The lights then came on. Michael saw Devon in his revamped Trans-Am!! Devon stepped out and introduced him to the Knight Industries 2000, or KITT. He explained that this is state-of-the-art technology. However, Michael took an instant dislike to the car, saying that it's like 'Darth Vader's bathroom!'. He couldn't believe what Knight Industries had done to his wonderful Trans-Am, he liked it as it is. Devon decided to demonstrate th car's 'bullet-proof' shell. He took out a mallet and hit the bonnet with it. BANG!! Not even a scratch!! Michael smiled but still not too depressed. So Devon took Michael for a spin in the car with Michael driving. All was well until Devon told Michael to 'drive straight for that semi ahead'. Which Michael did, and the car promptly seemed to steer itself out of the semi's path!! Back at the warehouse, Michael explained to Devon that this is his car and he can do whatever he wanted with it. Devon was forced to agree as he didn?t want to drive Michael away. With that, Michael started up the engine, drove the car straight through one of the black windows and drove off.
