Past Stars

Gary Lineker:Gary Lineker's Spurs career spanned from 1989 till 1992, where he took Spurs to a win in the FA Cup, so creating a new FA Cup record. It was former Barcelona Manager Terry Venables who brought the England international from Barcelona for a fee of £1.75million. He scored 67 league goals in 105 league appearences.
Paul Gascoigne:Paul Gascoigne was bought from Newcastle for £3 million in 1988 as a youngster and instantly proved a bargain for Spurs, as he steered them to the FA Cup final. Gazzamania hit London after England's memorable World Cup campaign and he didn't disappoint the Spurs fans, hitting the net 19 times in the league in 92 appearences. However, at the end of the 1991 season, he was to be sold to Lazio for a record £8 million but was reduced to £5.5 million after his infamous FA Cup final tackle on Gary Charles which caused Gascoigne to damage vital ligaments in his knee.
Glenn Hoddle:Glenn Hoddle was a Spurs player from 1975 till 1987 and that FA Cup final against Coventry. A regular England international, he scored 88 league goals in 377 league appearences. His trademark was wearing his shirt outside his shorts, a deliberate two-fingers act to the authorities. He is another Spurs player to be involved in the England set-up sometime in his life excluding as a player.
Teddy Sheringham: Sheringham was bought from Nottingham Forest by Terry Venables as an attacker in 1992 till 1997 and in nearly 200 league appearences scored 75 goals. Partnered that old fave, Klinsmann in 1994, and instantly struck up an on-field relationship which saw Spurs into the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Bought to replace Gary Lineker, who departed at the end of the season before, he repaid his transfer fee with interest. However, when he complained for a year about the lack of trophies, he was sold to the champions, Manchester United, for £3.5 million.
Jurgen Klinsmann:After the world cup in 1994, Alan Sugar pulled one of the coups of the new season by securing the services of the German International, Jurgen Klinsmann. Played for just one season, he scored 20 goals in 41 league appearences. However, using a well-known clause in his contract, he left Spurs to join Bayern Munich, leaving his number 18 shirt as a 'present' for Sugar which prompted Sugar to remark, "I wouldn't even wash my car with this shirt!!". However, when Spurs were again in dire straits in the 1997-98 season, Sugar and Klinsmann buried the hatchet and Klinsmann returned to Spurs. His form has been called into question, despite Klinsmann promising to repay the fans for their loyal support.
Ray Clemence:Ray Clemence was at Spurs from 1981 till 1987 and was bought from Liverpool. Played in 240 league appearences and was a hit with Spurs fans. Left in 1987 after that unfortunate FA Cup final against Coventry when he couldn't stop a Gary Mabbutt-deflected shot into goal. After being the Spurs coach, he then became involved in the England set-up.
