GRANT YOUNG!

UPDATED MAY, 2006

(Photo taken at The Kairo Club (now "The Drink", formerly "The Bank", oops, now "Desire", now a gay bar - the place changes owners every six months), WINNIPEG, March 2002. Thanks to Matt Gavritsas.) NEW PIX SOON!

Hi, I am Grant Young. You may have noticed there are quite a number of us around. So I'll start off by saying hello to all of the other Grant Youngs out there all over the world. And no, I'm not the Grant Young that was the drummer for Soul Asylum. Or any of the ones from Australia. One sent me an e-mail once. ("Gidday mates", or "G'day", or "Gudday", as I have been corrected by another Grant Young from Down Under - Geez there's a lot of them down there! Check my Guestbook! How's it goin' guys?) Or the engineering guy from Colorado.

Nor am I the guitar player living in Toronto who has what he calls the "Official" Grant Young site. He has the grantyoung dot com site address, check it out - you can hear some of his music - he's talented, original, and very good.

I am ((T H E)) Grant Young from WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA. A Hurricane-Free Zone and Earthquake-Free Zone smack dab in the center of North America. Check a map, we are right in the center. (Some U.S. geographical survey from the 1930's says that Rugby, North Dakota, is the actual geographical center of North America. Rugby has a population of about 2,000 people, none of whom know what "rugby" is, because they all just watch the NFL on TV, and Rugby is only a couple of hundred miles from WINNIPEG anyway, so, really the only significant, obvious, center of North America, and therefore the Universe, is WINNIPEG! Sorry Rugby. And sorry Toronto.)

(I used to play bass in a bar band when I was in university and I wasn't half bad. Maybe the drummer from Soul Asylum, the guitar player and I could get together and form the "Grant Young Supergroup".)

How about this Grant Young ? Again, not me. Here's a "Young" lad in Scotland. Not me, but I do have some Scottish blood in me. This is scary - here's an obituary for Grant Young! Not me!

I started this site back in 1997 and have just recently updated it a bit. (Hey, this is the 9th Anniversary of my website!)

Please read this Disclaimer before you continue any further.

Anyway, I DO LOVE BREAKFAST! It's the most important meal of the day! What's your favorite breakfast? Go to my Guestbook below and let everyone know, whether it's that "Big yellow box that every mom knows" or a Champagne breakfast.

I'm a single, Canadian male in my very late, late forties. Okay, so I'm fifty one. (I don't look a day over..., well, fifty-something.) My birthday is May 13th, the same day as Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, and, I'm sorry to say, Dennis Rodman.

I have a type of Arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. "Ankle what??" you say. I knew nothing about it either until I was told that I had it. It can be very frustrating and painful at times, but what can you do? I still get up and go to work in the morning every day just like the rest of the teeming masses. Mick Mars of Motley Crue has the same thing. Find out more about kicking AS here.

I have a twenty-eight year old son who is getting married this year, and a twenty-five year old daughter. My son is working on his PhD in Microbiology. My daughter is a hairdresser, and is the mother of my four year old grandson.

All of us usually get together and go out for BREAKFAST on Sunday mornings to different delicious WINNIPEG restaurants! These are not meant to be professional "reviews" of these places (See "Disclaimer" again if you have time), and I really thank all of these restaurants for putting in the effort to open up every Sunday morning. So, some of our favorites are:

The Pony Corral - Grant Park. (Try the Mixed Grill.)
The Pony Corral - Downtown. (Ehh, not as good as Grant Park.).
Aaltos (Canad Inn) - Both Polo Park and Pembina Highway. Good Buffet. (Haven't tried the others.)
Johnny's - Marion Street. (Great atmosphere.)
Holiday Inn - Both of the ones on Pembina Highway and one downtown. It's the Holiday Inn, what would you expect? Actually, they were all pretty good. (Haven't tried the others.)
The Garwood Grill on Pembina Highway - Absolutely Great. My favourite because you get tons of bacon! I used to work with a guy who liked to go to The Garwood for lunch. If anybody even suggested going there, he would start this little chant: "Gar-Wooood, Gar-Wooood, Gar-Wooood". They also have great pizza, and great sandwiches. Very affordable, and friendly staff. If I was giving stars, I'd have to say: ***** (five stars)
Denny's - It's Denny's, again, What would you expect? They closed a while ago. No more Denny's in Winnipeg. Is this a bad thing?
Salisbury House - (Blueberry Pancakes are great.) - Numerous locations throughout WINNIPEG. Burton Cummings from the Guess Who is a part owner, does TV ads for them. They are okay, even pretty good, but overpriced. I guess those "American Woman" royalty cheques just aren't cuttin' it, so he has to charge too much for sausage and eggs.
Norwood Hotel - Marion Street. (Great atmosphere.)
Green Gates - Expensive! But really good. Don't like the chicken sausages tho'.
Pembina Village Restaurant - Great.
Assiniboine Park Conservatory - (inexpensive.) or...
The Tavern on the Park at Assiniboine Park - (expensive.) (Both really good.)
The Nook - Sherbrook Street (Really tiny, really affordable, great breakfast).
Wilton's - Very good. Great ambiance. Too expensive for what you get.
Viviere - Osborne Village. (Italian. Very good. Nice patio in the summer.)
Star Grill - Interesting place. Decent breakfast.
The Original Pancake House - Pembina Hwy. (I remember as a kid originally going to the one at Polo Park. Anyway, besides a huge half a plate of Hash Browns, the Pembina one was pretty good.)
The "Original" Original Pancake House at Polo Park is gone now, so we went to the "new" Original Pancake House in the Clarion Hotel at Polo Park. It was good, about the same as the Pembina Highway location. Both have the best bacon in town.
MY PLACE! - I made breakfast for everybody last week. Eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns, toast and coffee. It was Fantastic! (At least I thought so.)
Quality Inn - Nice quaint little place. Good breakfast, too. They seemed a bit befuddled because we weren't actually guests of the hotel. Guess they don't get much traffic off the street.
Bridgeport Restaurant at The WINNIPEG Art Gallery - This was actually more like lunch, but it was really good. Great atmosphere on the roof of the Art Gallery and good food.
Stella's - Osborne Village. Good food but way too crowded.
Buccacino's - Osborne Village. Great buffet and fantastic atmosphere. A little pricey.
Cora's - A new place on Waverley, part of a chain from Quebec.. Great family atmosphere and a pretty good breakfast. Lots of variety.
COOKatoo's - Sargent and Erin. Cute place. Decent breakfast. Very affordable!
Oakwood Cafe - Osborne Street South. Very good breakfast.
Stella's - Kenaston. Just about as crowded as Stella's on Osborne, but for good reason. Good food, pretty good service and good atmosphere. Apparently Richard Gere came to this one when he was here.

Bernstein's Deli on Corydon - Ah, this is where it all started when my daughter and I began going for weekly Sunday breakfasts over five years ago. They aren't open on Sundays anymore, but we try to get there whenever we can during the week, or on Saturdays. It's still my daughter's absolutely favourite breakfast. I think they give you too many hash browns, but they ARE good.

More to come!

Hello to Susan, Diana and Dan in California, Kathleen in Arizona who emailed me, Iris in Georgia, Lorri in B.C., Kelly in Ontario, the Finnies of Saskatchewan, and my nephew Paul and his wife Erin in Ottawa.

If you are wondering what it's like here where I am...
For you American types, these temperatures are shown in Celsius. The low... and the high. To figure out the Fahrenheit temp, double the number and add about 30. So, if it's 20 degrees C, 20 x 2 = 40 plus 30 = about 70 degrees F. (On July 27/02 it was very hot everywhere in North America! Here in WINNIPEG it was 32 C. that weekend. But it was not 32 x 2 = 64 + 30 = 94 F. It was only a cool 90 F.)
August 13, 2003: 35C, not 100 - only 95F. You get the idea. I don't know the exact formula but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.
Anyway, when temperatures are this high our igloos melt and we have to find somewhere else to live.

And, Mr. Kehler, it's lookin' better, dont'cha think?

I met this guy through the KickAS site. His wife sent me this link to his page where he plays some good ol' country music. Give ALAN a listen HERE. Great graphics too. 'Specially that "Texas Woman". Don't mess with Texas! Or Alabama for that matter.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH ??

Another big fat WINNIPEG success story - "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"
Sure, it was supposed to be "AMERICA's #1 Romantic Comedy". Except it is actually about
2003 People's Choice Winner ---> Nia Vardalos
and her real life in WINNIPEG! In CANADA!
(Her real big fat wedding took place about six blocks away from where I live.)

*

Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez (and Mya and Ja Rule and a whole bunch more) filmed "Shall We Dance" in WINNIPEG in 2003.

*

Robin Williams, Holly Hunter and Woody Harrelson and others were here last May (2004) making "The Big White".

*

Now, this year it's Carmen Electra, Teri Polo and Craig Kilborn in "Nothing But The Truth".

*

"CAPOTE", which is apparently getting good Oscar buzz, was shot just outside of Winnipeg. IMDB notes that some of the prison guards were real prison guards from Headingly Correctional Centre, just outside of the city.
(March 5/06: So, the buzz was right, Philip Seymour Hoffman = Best Actor Oscar.)

*

Last year they filmed a CBS TV movie, "Category 6", here with Randy Quaid. This year it's "Category 7", about hurricanes and tornados that threaten to rip the whole world apart. (Art Bell, are you watching?) Again, Randy Quaid, and now Gina Gershon (I loved her in "Showgirls", a highlight of her career I'm sure!) and Shannon Doherty (Yikes!) are here. I went to the casting call for this. Maybe I will be in it!

*

Brad Pitt is here for about one day in October for his Jessie James movie, mostly shot in Alberta.

There's nothing down here.

Well, a little more about WINNIPEG that I didn't mention.

SPORTS

Doesn't interest me much. But there is plenty here for sports fans. We have a Canadian Football League football team - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Trivia note: Labatt's "Blue" beer is named after the Blue Bombers), who mostly suck this year. They have been very good in past years, even won the Grey Cup (the Canadian Super Bowl) a few times, but don't stand a chance this year. We have a Northern League Baseball team - The Winnipeg Goldeyes, who also suck this year. They have been quite good in the past. We have an American Hockey League hockey team - The Manitoba Moose. They are the Vancouver Canucks "farm team". A lot of the hockey fans in Winnipeg don't support them, because they (the fans) continue to moan about the loss of the Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, who, because they were continually needing to be propped up with tax money, were bleeding the city dry and left when they were bought out and became the Phoenix Coyotes. "Chris Jericho", and "Rowdy Roddy Piper" of the WWF, or the WWE now, I guess, are both from Winnipeg. The WWE comes here quite often to do TV shows. The Canadian National Volleyball team is based in Winnipeg. We had the Pan-American Games here in 1967 and in 1999. Kirby Cote, a blind swimmer from Winnipeg won, like, a million medals in the 2004 Paralympics, and has never really been given any decent recognition for her incredible victories. This year (2006) Winnipeg was really well represented by speed skater Cindy Klassen at the Torino Winter Olympics - we're talking FIVE medals! Unprecedented! Clara Hughes from Winnipeg got one too, I think. They should definitely get some big time recognition too. There are several curling champions from Winnipeg, but as most of you know, curling is more boring than golf. There are also a couple of very successful golfers from Winnipeg, but God help me if I know who they are. We have a race track, Assiniboia Downs, for the horsey types. We also have the Manitoba Marathon every Father's Day, and all kinds of other events, snowmobile races, cycling events, sailing events, fishing derbys, other watersports, and God knows what else.
There's lots here for you sporty types.

Okay, now, really, there is nothing else.

Nothing.

Honest to God.

NOTHING!!

R E A L L Y ! ! !

Okay, I'll give you ONE joke.

Did you hear who's in the hospital?

Sick People!

NOW...there REALLY is NOTHING after this!

No MORE!, this time I mean it!

...except for a nice farewell from Jessica Harper ("Phoenix" from "Phantom of the Paradise") at Phantompalooza 2 in WINNIPEG, April 29, 2006. The song is "Old Souls" from the movie. The guy introducing her is Paul Williams, who wrote this and some other great songs back in the Seventies ("We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days and Mondays", "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Rainbow Connection", the "Love Boat" theme song, etc., etc.), and was "Swan" in the movie. Thanks to "cantfindthespacebar", who like me, was there (I had goosebumps when Jessica sang this song, my God I love this girl, and I got to meet her!, and Paul Williams!), and thanks to YouTube for the clip.

Okay, that, truly, is it.
