Relevant Professional Experience

Program Assistant, University of Florida, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Gainesville, FL, July 2006 – present

Successfully works on projects with a team of faculty, staff, and students. Provides excellent customer service to the public via email and phone. Maintains inventory and purchases office supplies. Helped initiate a department sustainability team. Designs, edits, manages correspondence and deadlines, and organizes the printing of an award-winning department newsletter (IFAS “Gold Image Award,” 2006). Assists sustainable communities with the implementation of educational kiosks. Supports the nationally broadcast educational television series “Living Green” by providing assistance with filming, editing, order fulfillment, duplication of digital media and artwork, promotions, and accounts receivable. Evaluates and certifies Florida Backyard Landscapes for Wildlife Program applications. Edits and formats UF/IFAS Extension publications for department faculty and students. Provides graphic design support to the department. Maintains and develops content for 5 web sites: Florida Wildlife Extension, Living Green, Living in Harmony, Living Green in Madera, and the Florida Public Bird-Monitoring Program. Regularly attends seminars, lectures, workshops, and training to increase knowledge and skills.

As of July, 2008: Responsible for accounts payable duties, such as approving e-procurement card charges, creating requisitions, and paying other departmental invoices, as well as continuing departmental Extension responsibilities. Completed Pro3 Series Fiscal Management Certification, a training program provided by the University of Florida.

Internet Researcher, Environmental Health Sciences, Charlottesville, VA, February 2006 – present

Researches environmental health-related stories from mainstream news sources worldwide. Edits story ledes and metadata, and posts stories using organization-specific software that publishes stories onto the aggregate news web sites Environmental Health News and The Daily Climate. Participates in chat room-based teamwork with other e-commuting researchers to coordinate delegation and completion of news searches. Works in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines. Reads thousands of stories related to environmental health both on and off of the job.

Research Assistant, University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), Gainesville, FL, January 2006 – July 2006

Assisted with research on a project titled IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas. Conducted internet and library searches for information about potentially invasive non-native plant species. Researched and organized data for species profiles. Designed and edited an academic-style poster illustrating research and results for presentation at the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council 2006 Conference.

Herbarium Technician, University of Florida Herbarium, Gainesville, FL, July 2005 – December 2005

Used visual skills to prepare and arrange plant specimens in an aesthetically-pleasing manner. Filed herbarium specimens into the collection. Learned basic plant taxonomy and a number of plant families. Learned basic herbarium collection organization and curation. Entered records into herbarium specimen database.
