Working on Thailand Business Pages web site involved the translations
of thousands of technical terms from English into Thai and vice
versa. In the process, a searchable Thai-English-Thai technical
terms glossary was compiled. This is a screenshot:
The
glossary contains not only free-standing words, but also word combinations.
Tha is very important considering the descriptive nature of the
Thai language where many terms cannot be translated without a very
clear understanding of technical matters.
The
work was complicated by the fact that there are many English technical
terms that do not have an established Thai equivalent and, even
worse, many incorrectly translated terms. It happens very rarely
that a technical dictionary's compilers are experts in both technology
and linguistics and this was exactly that very rare opportunity.
It
is an .xlc file so it offers virtually unlimited opportunities for
expansion. Among other features are the built-in search function
and the possibility to line up both the Thai and English entries
alphabetically. Some entries have usage examples, more are planned
to be added.
Another
planned project is to break the entries down by the topic (Construction,
Automotive industry, Metallurgy, etc.) and cross-reference them
if they overlap or belong to more than one topic. The implementation
of this capability is built in .xlc files and should pose no problem.
It
is also possible to add more languages.
The
work on the glossary has been halted due to my resignation from
the company and relocation to The Netherlands. I would be very much
interested in finding a partner/sponsor to continue this project.
