Elric has to be one
of the best literary characters of all time. A doom ridden anti-hero
on a quest to discover who and what he is, why he is so different from
his own people (the Melniboneans) and from the Humans he sometimes admires,
sometimes pities, and sometimes hates. He is bound to his sentient
Chaos Sword, Stormbringer, to provide him with his strength and
vitality (Elric was born a thin-blooded Albino, and as such would die without
his soul stealing sword).
Elric, in fact, is an
incarnation of the Eternal Champion. A being cursed by Fate to wage
war for all eternity. It is by Elric's hand that one version of the
Earth (the one that pre-dates our own in the temporal cycle) is destroyed,
so as to allow the ushering in of a new age.
