I saw
no source of light
I flew
into the Darkness
and I was
afraid.
And alone.
-the Book of Nodtm
I
guess you have found your way into the darkest and most insane recesses
of my mind...
you
have found yourself in the section of the mind which feeds my addictions
to Role Playing. Oooo. Scary.
What?
What's role playing you may ask. Well. Ever heard of D&D?
That's role playing.
What?!?
What's D&D?? Hmm... the easiest way (but not really the most
accurate way) of explaining role playing would be like this:
take
one part acting (this can be live action or simple table side improv and
banter)
take
one part board game
add
some dice (or some other way to determine random outcomes, ie paper/rock/scissor
works)
and
create an alternate and fantastic persona that you would like to pretend
to be (ie a Vampire or a Knight, or even a regular Joe)
Now,
take away the board. You don't need it anymore. You're "board"
is the nothing less than the world your character lives in. That
is important to remember. You and your character do not live in the
same world. For one thing your character ain't real (although there
are some nuts out there who believe they are). Secondly your character
may not live in a world even remotely resembling ours. The "world"
is created in the imagination of the players and the game-master (or storyteller
or dungeon-master or whatever name is given to the referee and adventure
maker of the game). Instead of moving six spaces closer to the Conservatory
from the Library (get it?), you run down the street and the GM tells you
what happens as a result of your actions. Sound confusing?
Sound interesting? Try it out.
There
is a whole lot more to it than that, but that is all the time I am willing
to put into the explanation.
So...
what games have I played? I think I have played all of them, but
not regularly. I used to be such a junkie, and I would go to all
those cons and stuff like that.
Here
are some of the things I used to be into:
*Just
about anything from the Palladium
RPG Company. I can still remember sitting around a table
after school, drinking soda and eating pizza (this was before beer and
cigarettes were an option for me), and rolling up the freakiest little
mutant badgers you could ever imagine... (if the above link wasn't good
for you, check out this
one.)
*Anyone
who role plays has played D&D and/or AD&D.
I am not even going to bother to give you links. Look it up in yahoo
and spend a year or two going through the links yourself.
*Warhammer
Fantasy Role Playing Game. I've never come across a good
Warhammer FRPG site, let me know if you find one.
*Toon
and GURPS are a couple of Steve
Jackson games that we played more than once (that doesn't mean
we played them more than twice though)
*Star
Wars and Paranoia (to a lesser degree) are two of the games
from West End Games
that we indulged in.
*If
you've enjoyed Michael Moorcock's Elric saga, then maybe
you should try the RPG
based on the books. One of my personal favourites, not because of
the system or anything, just 'cause I liked the books so much.
*So...
I guess those are some of the silly games I have played. And now
this leads me to White Wolf.
If you role play and you haven't heard of White Wolf, well... you need
to get out more. Then again, if you role play you probably need to
get out more too... Anyway, this is the current mess o' games that
I have been getting wrapped up in, so check 'em out and look for my characters
page.
