Oxford
Mail. Scuba at Bullingdon Arms 25th June 1998
On a return visit to Oxford after their Radio
One Sound City début at the Dolly, Scuba certainly haven't lost
any of the poise that won so many praises last time around. Their own brand
of muscular pop showcases sheer energy, tempered with a keen sense of melody
and a mischievous desire to surprise. Mid set, a couple of numbers floundered
into the perilous waters of "cheery pop", but fortunately the
next thunderous slice of melody always pulled them to safety. "Kids
are clever" and "In my car" deserve particular mention here.
A breeze of summery guitars broken by sharp icy blasts of inspiration -
this kicks traditional guitar pop into touch. After only a 30 minute set,
you're left believing the best is yet to come, and these four are destined
for great things.
