WHY I LOVE NAMI
by Judith A. Baumle

I have been involved in the fight to kick the behind of Mental Illness since the day I became introduced to it through my daughter's illness of Bipolar. This was in 1994. The nightmare she and I faced at that time is one I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Fortunately for me, since I had no clue where to turn for help, someone suggested that I contact an organization named NAMI. I called the National office who gave me the number of the closest affiliate to the hospital where my daughter lay in a catatonic state. The affiliate immediately walked me through the process (via phone) of how to handle the doctors, the nurses and my daughter. Because of that call, I was able to fight for the treatment that she needed to get well...to this day, my daughter thanks me for intervening and for fighting for her to get her the help she needed when she was most vulnerable. She will tell anyone who will listen that "my Mother was my voice when I could not speak and if it were not for her, I would be helpless, homeless or dead."

NAMI is not perfect but it has over 185,000 members strong standing together to fight the good fight. I could not have been there for my daughter fighting as knowledgeably as I was able to do if NAMI had not been there for me.

It is my opinion that those of us whose lives are impacted by Bipolar (or other brain disorders) need to support NAMI because NAMI fights the good fight in the halls of Congress, the White House and the Legislature. NAMI gently but firmly:
DEMANDS that more money be spent for research,
DEMANDS that we be given parity (equal coverage) in insurance,
DEMANDS that proper treatment be provided,
DEMANDS that money be made available to provide education to families and our loved ones,
DEMANDS that our loved ones be treated fairly, equally and with respect,
DEMANDS that this nation Stamp Out Stigma concerning these illnesses.

It expects our political figures to earn their pay and vote OUR way...

NAMI fights for you and NAMI fights for me...NAMI truly is the NATION'S VOICE on MENTAL ILLNESS...

A MENTAL HEALTH (HORROR) FACT
In a recent study, respondents were asked to rate which disability groups were most/least acceptable to them. Those disability groups most acceptable were individuals with obvious physical handicaps; next came those who were blind or deaf. The least acceptable people were ex-convicts, the retarded, and alcoholics. Can you guess who was in LAST place? The mentally ill!

Mental illnesses, (aka: brain disorders) ARE genetically transmitted. They are treatable and treatment works! No one "chooses" to inherit these genes...no one "chooses" mental illness. Let's get smart and recognize mental illness for what it is.

The above fact is quoted from: "Family To Family", a FREE twelve Week education class designed specificaly to aid families in understanding their loved ones illness. This class is sponsored by/through NAMI. Check with your State NAMI office or your local NAMI affiliate for the class closest to you.

WHAT IS P.L.A.N.? PLAN GIVES FAMILIES WITH A DISABLED LOVED ONE A WAY TO PLAN FOR THEIR FUTURE...Families with a disabled family member often worry about what will happen to their loved one after they are gone.

PLAN of NORTHWEST OHIO was established two years ago for that very reason. PLAN staff work with families to develop Personal Plans of Care for their loved one REGARDLESS of the disability. For an information packet more fully explaining PLAN, call: 1-419-243-9178 or visit NAMI-O's website for more details.
