Five Iron Frenzy
By

Ah, the life of a band. The touring, the fun, the action. The adventure just never stops. It just keeps going and going. But eight-piece ska sensation Five Iron Frenzy tops all the mishaps and mix-ups put together. "We were abducted by aliens. It was pretty strange. They performed bizarre experiments on us, and I think they were trying to figure out how to clone humans for food. So we let them eat our trumpet player." That's not all Five Iron Frenzy's been up to as the calendar has rolled by. With the recent release of their latest and greatest surprise "Our Newest Album Ever" on the heels of their bright debut "Upbeats and Beatdowns," the band has many plans underway. Laid-back and friendly, with a hint of Lucky Charms and long, hard hours of playing with Star Wars toys in the backyard, lead singer Reece Roper takes a spin on just what's the haps with Five Iron Frenzy. Since the release of their debut "Upbeats and Beatdowns," Five Iron Frenzy has made some healthy growth spurts. While they were only able to make two tours last year, because some of the band members still attend school, they learned some big lessons through hardships, embarrassments, and some things that were, well, just plain weird. "On our very first tour, our trailer was demolished, so we had to rent a van for the tour, and buy a new trailer when we got home," reflects another kindred spirit in the band, bass player Keith Horeig. "Once, Reece was jumping around, and he landed on the drum kit. His wallet chain got wrapped around one of the tuning pegs on the bass drum. So, when he stood up and tried to walk away, he drug the bass drum about three feet forward." "For me, one of the things that He's shown me is how hard it is to be alone, and be quiet, in our society," Reece zones in on an issue he's had to deal with. "When we get by ourselves, we're always turning on the radio. Like, when you do your Bible study, and stuff, it's hard to do without the TV on, or the stereo going. One of the lessons He's teaching me is we hear God the most when we're by ourselves, when we're quiet and we're listening for Him. Not when we're at church, or hanging out with a bunch of Christians, or watching Christian TV, or listening to Christian music." With plans to embark on the "Ska Against Racism" tour with such ska giants as Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Hepcat, and many others, the world will soon behold the fun excitement packed into Five Iron Frenzy. Expect the trademark polyester, the Elvis Presley costumes and bunny ears. "It's just as zany as ever," Reece laughs. "We used to wear goofy costumes almost all the time. We kind of got this fear of people thinking of us as a gimmick band. We're trying to tone down on the costumes a little, but we're still goofy and crazy, doing belly-flops and cannonballs on stage." Five Iron Frenzy also recently recorded a three-song 7 inch for Asian Man Records, owned by Michael Park, the former vocalist and saxophone player for renowned general market ska act Skankin' Pickle. A Christian himself, Michael Park has some prime distribution connections for his product. Another bonus for the band was Michael's guest appearance on the saxophone on one of the songs on "Our Newest Album Ever." Whether they're abducted by aliens, or doing sky-dives onto the stage, or spreading the Good News and stirring others on, always remember, Five Iron Frenzy will be skankin' your way.
