BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS!
"... the buying of more books...is nothing less than the soul reaching
towards infinity... we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence
exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance." - A.E.Newton
I love books and I love to read. My favourite place in the whole world is a library! I really admire Oprah Winfrey and others who are encouraging people to read and I must admit I am worried about the declining numbers of people who read. The reason: I feel sorry for them!!! They are missing out on so much! If you are one of these people, pick up a book. I have listed the books I have read in 2000 with a review why not try one of these to start you off. If you like me are an avid book reader, drop me a line, I am always on the look out for good books to read. Please feel free to comment on any of my selections, either through email or via my guestbook.
I will be adding books as I read them throughout the year, so come back regularly and see what I am reading.
"Sitting last winter among my books, and walled round with all the
comfort
and protection which they and my fireside could afford me,--I began
to
consider how i loved the authors of those books; how i loved them
too, not
only for the imaginative pleasures they afforded me, but for their
making
me love the very books themselves, and delight to be in contact with
them."
Leigh Hunt, from his essay "My Books"

Tis by Frank McCourt (Book on Tape)
'Tis a blessing that the author narrates his own work. McCourt follows up
his Audie Award-winning performance in Angela's Ashes with another
brilliant reading as he chronicles his return to post-World War II New
York. Like all good storytellers, McCourt has good stories to tell; 'Tis
pulses with grim adversity and quiet triumphs--character-shaping
moments that gain the listener's empathy. What makes McCourt a great
storyteller is his ability to give these moments just the right amount of
humor and perspective. His lyrical tones are wise but not weary; he's
survived life's challenges to tell his tale. And while it may be trite to credit
McCourt's verbal skills to his Irish heritage, these war stories were
undoubtedly polished amongst friends in the pubs. 'Tis is Grammy
material, and a perfect example of how an author's voice can enhance the
written word.
Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

which introduced readers to Claire Randall and her journey through time,

Billy Straight by Jonathon Kellerman
A Dickensian tale of innocence, urban depravity, and one boy's efforts to
maintain his own code of ethics in the face of danger, by the author of
"Survival of the Fittest". Twelve-year-old Billy has fled the abuse of his
life at home and is fighting to survive on L.A.'s meanest streets. After he
witnesses a brutal murder, Billy becomes the center of terrifying attention

himself
Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow by Peter Hoeg
ODeemed the Best Book of 1993 by Time, Entertainment Weekly, and
People, and nominated for a 1994 Abby Award, this #1 bestseller is "a
superbly constructed thriller" (People). A book of profound intelligence .
. . in the league of Melville or Conrad."
A monk swimming by Malachay McCourt
Slapped with a libel suit after an
appearance on a talk show, Malachy
McCourt crows, "If they could only see me now in the slums of Limerick,
a big shot, sued for a million. Bejesus, isn't America a great and
wonderful country?" His older brother Frank's Pulitzer Prize-winning
memoir, Angela's Ashes, took its somber tone from the bleak
atmosphere of those slums, while Malachy's boisterous recollections are
fueled by his zestful appreciation for the opportunities and oddities of his
native land. He and Frank were born in Brooklyn, moved with their
parents to Ireland as children, then returned to the States as adults. This
book covers the decade 1952-63, when Malachy roistered across the
U.S., Europe, and Asia, but spent most of his time in New York City.
There his ready wit and quick tongue won him an acting job with the Irish
Players, a semiregular stint on the Tonight show hosted by Jack Paar,
and friendships with some well-heeled, well-born types who shared his
fondness for saloon life and bankrolled him in an East Side saloon that
may have been the first singles bar. He chronicles those events--and
many others--with back-slapping bonhomie. Although McCourt
acknowledges the personal demons that pursued him from his
poverty-stricken childhood and destroyed his first marriage, this is on the
whole an exuberant autobiography that pays tribute to the joys of a
freewheeling life.
The Chamomlie Lawn by Mary Wesley (book on tape)
Sad, funny, and whimsical, The Camomile Lawn is the story of one
extended family's adventures in London during the Blitz. "A distinctive,
absorbing novel, told with a true storyteller's verve, an enchanting ability
to involve, touch and surprise the reader."
Voyager by Diana Gabaldon
Gabaldon mesmerized readers with a love story that spanned two
centuries in Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber. This new novel in
Gabaldon's highly acclaimed time-travel saga again features intrepid time
traveler Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser, the gallant 18th-century
Scottish clansman who stole Claire's heart and whose memory will not
loosen its hold on her, even across the chasm of centuries.
