Key Words and Terms Relating to Lesbianism

Lesbian: A homosexual woman.
Homosexual: One who is romantically, emotionally, and/or sexually attracted to members of his/her own sex.
Heterosexual: One who is romantically, emotionally, and/or sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex from one's own.
Bisexual: One who is romantically, emotionally, and/or sexually attracted to members of both sexes.
Dyke: A general term for lesbians, although sometimes used in reference to particularly masculine lesbians (see butch ). Dyke is sometimes attempted to be used by homophobes as an insulting or offensive term, but it rarely works, since most lesbians refer to themselves and other lesbians as dykes anyway.
Dike: 1. a) A ditch or watercourse b) The bank of earth thrown up in digging a ditch 2. An embankment or dam made to prevent flooding by the sea or by the river 3. A protective barrier or obstacle. p> So please don't call me a dike, I'm not a ditch or a dam, though I may sometimes be a bitch, and though I may "damn" a lot of things (although I never retain water as a dam does. Call me lucky, I guess). The proper spelling is "dyke." Learn it, use it, and get terribly frustrated when you fail to insult me.
Butch: A lesbian whose appearance, clothing, and/or manner is seen as "masculine." Also applies: Bulldyke, Deisel Dyke, Bulldagger.
Femme: A lesbian whose appearance, clothing, and/or manner is seen as "feminine." Also applies: Lipstick lesbian.
