Amateur Radio
Amateur radio is about communicating. Amateurs talk on the shortwave bands,
via satellites and using computers. Amateur radio is also about cutting
out the "middle-man". You are talking directly to the person you are in
contact with.
This self-reliance is also a reason why amateur radio is of value during
emergencies - even when all the systems reliant on phone networks or radio
repeaters are useless amateur radio still has a very good chance of getting
through.
