1. News from Virgin Records (april, 1998)

Lenny Kravitz is set to release his first album in more than two-and-a-half years with the release of his fifth record, entitled, "5," on May 12. The album was produced by Lenny himself and was engineered by Terry Manning. The first single to be taken from the album will be "If You Can't Say No." The video for the track was shot in LA by director Mark Romanek, who previously worked with Lenny on the video for "Are You Gonna Go My Way."

Lenny began work on "5" in the Fall of 1996, shortly after his finishing his stint on the H.O.R.D.E. festival that year. The eight months of sessions were recorded at Compass Point studios in the Bahamas and Ghetto Lounge studios in New York City. Lenny wrote all tracks except for one, "Live," which was co-written by longtime Kravitz band guitarist Craig Ross.

The album's sound is said to sound far more modern than 1995's "Circus, " with various techno samples being incorporated into Kravitz' signature funk/R&B/rock cocktail. Although Lenny has gone for a more experimental approach to the music, the themes for most of the songs are far more personal than ever before. One of the tracks, "Thinking of You," was written as a tribute to his late mother, actress Roxie Roker -- who was best known as "Helen" of the interracial couple on "The Jeffersons" -- and features Kravitz and Ross incorporating the unique percussion sound of Heineken bottles. Another song, "Little Girl's Eyes," was written by Kravitz as a birthday present for daughter Zoë, the child born out of his four-year relationship with actress Lisa Bonet.

If You Can't Say No

The first single from Lenny Kravitz' forthcoming album "5" will be the soulful ballad, If You Can't Say No, which went to radio this week. The video for the single, which was directed by the award-winning Mark Romanek and co-stars model-turned-actress Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element), is still being worked on.
