(What the .. is) Linux and KDE ?
Linux is a UNIX based operating system (OS) for PCs and KDE (K Desktop Environment) is a graphical desktop surface.
And ?
There are many things to say .. lets make it short:
Linux was introduced by Linus Torwald in the late 80th with the possibility for all "crazy programmers" and "pc enthusiasts" to develope it further but with the restriction that all this had to be public and free of charge. Unbelievably Linux was improved to a quick, stable and free Unix based operating system. And the same kind of people made tonns of programms and applications for it. Some companies sell all this collected on some CDs with additional knowhow and literature as low as 20 to 50 us$. (Compare this with the software you are using...) You find much more information on the Web ! |
KDE was started by some of these
"crazy programmers" 20 months (!) ago and "is a powerful graphical desktop
environment for Unix workstations. The KDE desktop aims to combine ease of use,
contemporary functionality and outstabding graphical design with the technological
superiority of the Unix operating system." (self description) Think of something like Windows but better and free ! They just released the first official version (1.0), more details you find on their Web site ! |
So what ?
If you hate to pay a LOT of money for software which makes troubles (or hate to use illegal copies ,-) and/or if you want to use your computer with applications you could not afford till now, read a little more about Linux, you will find many links on the Web, buy a nice book and purchase a "distribution", I recommend SuSE (6.0 is out now) ! All for 50 us$ and you will have a perfect working system (e.g. you can build up a LAN network server with internet routing and mail/news server - which costs with Microsoft products something like 5000 us$ !!!).
