In 1820 Charles Babbage invented a primitive adding machine to help the British navy construct more accurate nautical charts. Since then the idea of complex mathematical machines has grown and evolved into multi-billion dollar industries spanning every walk of society. Super fast silicon processors cooled with liquid nitrogen have replaced Babbage's cogs. The simple arithmetic that his machine was responsible has evolved into machines capable of calculating pi to the billionth decimal point ("Some people talk about the area of circles...but I'm doing something about it!" -Dilbert)
However this course is concerned with the mechanisms of Babbage's cog box rather than the inter-workings of super-conducting processors. By understanding the simple logic that ran Babbage's mystery box, we have grown to understand the very base logic that allows Deep Blue to open a can of whoop ass on any chess master that dare approach it. Oddly enough, the logic that drives Deep Blue can be seen in the truth tables over in the left frame.
