Why a page for The Toll?
It all started in November of 1988. My brother Doug and I were watching "120 Minutes" one Sunday night when they did one of their spotlights on one of the new bands they were featuring that night. (You guessed it: The Toll... Have a cookie...) After the piece, they played the video for 'Jonathan Toledo'. My brother and I just sat there mesmerized by what we heard and saw: a VERY long video for a song that included this Morrison-esque narration in the middle of it. When it was over, Doug and I just turned to each other and went, "Whoa...". We were completely blown away; not just because we liked the video but because we actually saw something unconventional on MTV! I bought a cassette of "The Price of Progression" the next day and played for something like six months straight. I played it to my friends and they went out and bought it. I played it during my shift at the college station where I worked at the time and people would call and ask, "Who the hell is that?" Some would ask in a good way, and some wanted to here the Cure instead... I was hooked. The Toll came to San Antonio in February of 1989 and I was ready to be there. One of the local promoters, Greg Wilson, had heard their record as well and decided to bring the Toll to town for a FREE SHOW out of his own pocket! That confirmed by belief that, not only were these guys great, but I was on to something hip... |
