MEng Old Boys' News

Oi! Travellers!

Travel the world. Circle the globe. Go off to foreign lands to find yourself (well, you've tried the bottom of every bottle and underneath all the tables in all the bars in Sheffield, time to look further abroad). Haven't we all heard!? It's the new excuse not to get a job!
Actually it's only to make the rest of us resigned to staying in England jealous, and it's working! We have no desire to get rid of you all though, so here's a chance to gloat from your marvellous newly-found surroundings while you're on your travels. Simply drop the Old Boys' Club an e-mail (or ask someone you're writing to to pass it on) and we'll run a section designed to track your paths over the globe and tell your tales of outrageous deeds in lands afar. If we get enough stories we'll have our own "Lonely Planet" thing going. And we'll give you points too!

speaking of points...

When drawing up a draft of the personal profiles we wanted to run on everyone the points system (that bottom category on the page) seemed like a good idea, but we've yet to decide on what basis its going to work (other than "think of a number"). So we'd like to welcome all suggestions on the subject. It should, I guess, represent the extent of the mark (or damage) each one of our little group has left on the world, its society, and, indeed, each other. Get thinking people!

The Great Go-Kart Grand Prix

The afternoon of Thursday 10th of June at Avago Karting lived up to all expectations and is an experience that will surely have to be repeated. As predicted, Alex walked off with the big prize with an impeccable performance behind the wheel, though Bruce was close behind in second, putting in a storming fastest lap of the day at 19.94 seconds! Fortunately, or perhaps amazingly, road rage took a back seat despite a number of quite spectacular skids and crashes, and a queue for the sin bin longer than that at the bar! Big Rich takes the humour post for not really fitting in the go-kart (or race suit!), and Rich at the other end of the spectrum still needed a back rest (comfort I assure you!). Of course no-one is going to forget Lynn's shear brilliance behind the wheel of the go-kart going on to win the 'B' Group final. Just to prove that we are all engineers Des was giving us the low down on allsorts of racing techniques to enhance kart performance - turns out you was talking rubbish mate!!! - leaning out on the corners my foot!
Due to the bookie's favourite waltzing home in first the princely sum of £7.50 was raised by our bad habits and will wing its way to the British Heart Foundation as the charity of choice. Many thanks to all of those who were tempted into a flutter.
And now those classified results:

More Gambling

Becoming something of a craze it seems...over a longer term Rich W, Stevie, Petey B, Joe and Rach each staked the princely sum of 5 English pounds on their future earning power - the first to gross 50 grand in a year claiming the kitty. Miss Armitage obviously has the head start at this early stage, but with a career treading the boards in the offing Pete could be jumping into that bracket before we know it! Again, watch this space...

None yet. Give us a chance. Hang-on Dan, didn't you try and kill me with a rounders ball! (Rich)
