It's season!

2001 Northern Harmony Festival was fabulous! Thanks to Chords of Spruce, From the Edge, On Cue, Apocalypse Kow , and HeeBee JeeBee’s for their participation.

Edmonton, October 13, 2001: On Saturday October 13, 2001 Calgary’s own The Heebee-jeebees were crowned Canadian Champions of Harmony at the 4th Annual Northern Harmony Sweepstakes held in Edmonton.  In addition to first place, the Heebee-jeebees also took home awards for Audience Favourite, Best Original Song (Channel 12), and Best Soloist (Ken Lima-Coelho).   The competition is run as an official event of CASA, the Contemporary A cappella Society of America.   The two and one-half hour long show featured six diverse and talented a cappella groups ranging from 3-8 members.  Second Place went to another group from Calgary, On Cue a division of the Youth Singers of Calgary.  This marks the 2nd time the Heebee-jeebees have been awarded Canadian Champions.  The Heebee-jeebees also won the inaugural Northern Harmony competition in 1997, and went on to be the first Canadian a cappella group to reach the world finals in 1998.

A Cappella News and Bits in Alberta

 Really Really Old News...

2000 Northern Harmony II. It was a Voce sweep. They took Audience Favourite, Best Original Song (for a Martin Murphy tune, "Let It Go"), and First Place. Second went to Calgary's Standing Room Only, and Edmonton's Ukrainian women's quartet Heruvymy took third. A good time was had by all!

Bragging rights: Calgary's Western Hospitality Singers have been, for the second time in three years, invited to perform at the international barbershop convention (taking place in Anaheim, CA, the last weekend of June and first week of July, 1999). They've also been invited to tour Austria in 2000!

A Cappella has a home on Alberta radio. Lark Clark of the Edmonton group Juba is the morning DJ on CKUA. Mondays at 10:30AM-ish, she will be doing "Standing on the Corner," an a cappella spotlight.

If you're interested in buying a cappella CDs without going the mail-order route, your best best (in Edmonton) is The Gramophone. I've bought Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Anonymous 4 there, my old roomate bought me the Flirtations, and I've seen the Real Group and Voce there as well. And, these lucky people are the only store in Canada to be carrying A Cappella All-Stars, the 1998 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards CD (which features Saskatoon's STREETNiX and Calgary's Heebee-jeebees). Stop by, spend a few bucks, support the cause - all proceeds from the All-Stars CD go towards a cappella projects, like Northern Harmony. And while you're at it, stop by the Gramophone and ask if they carry a CD by the House Jacks.
