This Northern California quintet, straight out of the streets of
Sacramento, brings an eclectic mix of sounds to this year's KROQ
Almost Acoustic Christmas. They have already toured with the likes
of such innovative artists as Al Green, Jonathan Richman, the
Meters, and the Meat Puppets, and their sophomore album, Fashion
Nugget, has critics praising them for their creativity and
diversity. Vocalist John McCrea says, "When we're playing live it's
a little messier, louder and more enegetic." The frontman also
enjoys a chance at a little interaction with the audience. "Rather
than impose our sound upon people for 45 minutes and then leave
the stage," he says, "there's a lot of dialogue between us and the
audience during the show." The band strives for a creative independece
that includes producing their own albums, videos, and artwork. Cake's
first video/single, "The Distance," has already received steady airplay
from MTV and KROQ. Grooves seems to be the foundation for Cake songs.
"You know," McCrea says, "Hank Williams Sr. grooves and Parliament
grooves. We want the groove to make people tap their toes without
neccessarily getting consensus from their brain."
