Liquid Tension Experiment

Magna Carta

Talk about your supergroups with players from Dream Theater, King Crimson, and The Dixie Dregs. The result is Liquid Tension Experiment, a powerful progressive rock quartet. Mike Portnoy, drummer for Dream Theater, leads the pack of such prog-illuminaries as fellow DT-bandmate John Petrucci, bass man extraordinaire Tony Levin, and Dixie Dregs keyboardist Jordan Rudess. What’s more amazing than the line-up is the fact that they wrote and recorded this prog fusion masterpiece in less than a week.

From the driving sounds of “Paradigm Shift” to the new age subtleties of “Osmosis”, this CD is packed with textured prog rock instrumentals that give each player a chance to shine. “The Stretch”, a funk fest, segues into “Freedom Of Speech”, a ballad turned heavy duty rocker. This tune spotlights a duel between guitar and keys, as if the instruments are the free thinkers and are merely using the musicians to speak their minds.

The music here is fresh and although Petrucci and Portnoy have been playing side by side for over ten years, there’s only one track that really sounds like Dream Theater -- “Universal Mind”. The final track, “Three Minute Warning”, is 28 minutes of sheer brilliance. Portnoy refers to it as, “a half hour jam of 100% completely improvised insanity.”

Tony Levin shows his versatility here by providing half of a serious rhythm section. The King Crimson resident bass and stick man has played with the likes of Peter Gabriel and John Lennon, and is the collaborator-supreme. Most recently he worked with Terry Bozzio and Steve Stevens on Black Light Syndrome, with Bill Bruford on Bruford/Levin Upper Extremities, and somehow made time for his latest solo effort, From The Caves Of The Iron Mountain.

Jordan Rudess currently pounds the keys with drummer Rod Morgenstein for the Rudess Morgenstein Project. Rudess and Morgenstein were bandmates in The Dregs. Their debut album is available through Jordan’s website. Petrucci and Portnoy are currently touring with Dream Theater.
