With the release of their tenth album, Radiation, England's Marillion seems to have put forth one of their most ambitious undertakings yet. The progressive rockers, known for their no nonsense approach, seem to maintain a light, rollicking air throughout this effort, exploring different angles this time around with their songwriting and recording techniques.
As vocalist/lyricist Steve Hogarth states, "every album we've ever done has been a pretty radical reaction to its predecessor. But Radiation seems to be more radical than usual." The album's strengths emanate from the fact that one would be hard pressed to classify their music to one specific genre. This would explain, perhaps, why their fans are so devout.
I personally enjoyed the opening country blues intro to "Costa Del Slough" which then led into the CD's strongest cut, "Under the Sun" that included blistering lead from guitarist Steve Rothery, reminiscent of Queen's Brian May.
I was also impressed with the blues-laced "Born to Run" along with The Beatles-influenced number, "These Chains."
Thumbs up for Marillion. They are scheduled to tour Europe in November and tentatively in the US in February. Check out our interview with Steve Hogarth.
