Ex-President Of The U.S.A. Jason Finn Debuts Sanford Arms

Although the Presidents of the United States of America are playing their final show this weekend, drummer Jason Finn has already shown his next hand: Saturday night (Jan. 24), he debuted with his new bandmates in Sanford Arms at the small Seattle club OK Hotel.
As Sanford Arms opened up that night's three- band bill, it might have looked like Finn was starting over again -- at the bottom. However, it also appeared that he was 100% behind the new project, energetically delivering more drum lashes per minute than he perhaps had become used to with the minimal pop of PUSA.
Sanford Arms -- which is fronted by ex-Alcohol Funnycar singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ben London, and also includes Andrew McKeag from Seattle's Shuggie on guitar and organ, along with Rob Witmer and Pete Remine from another Seattle combo, St. Bushmills Choir, on accordion and bass, respectively -- delivered a short, tight set.
Nervous and a little stiff to begin with, the band loosened up quickly on "Desert Propellers," as McKeag played vibrant organ runs before adding bottleneck guitar to London's slamming rhythm chords on "Golden Ice Age." London introduced the latter song as being about "the death of the Seattle music scene," causing many smirks in the house.
Despite the homey touches of accordion and bottleneck slide, this was not alt-country: the band's songs lie closer to indie rock, with London's dry, plaintive vocals and the eclectic instrumentation adding an element of complexity to the sound.
As far as recording plans go, London told allstar after the show, "We will probably do some sooner rather than later. Until then we're just letting things take their own course."
