It all started when they had their first official rehersal in february 14th 1992.
Weezer was formed in Los Angeles, though none of its
members hail from that city. Singer-guitarist and songwriter Rivers Cuomo is from
Connecticut, new bassist Mikey Welsh appeared from Boston, Massachusetts, drummer Pat Wilson comes from
Buffalo, N.Y., and guitarist Brian Bell made his way west from Knoxville, Tenn.
Birthdays of good old boys are:
- Rivers: June 13th, 1970
- (Matt: September 22nd, 1969)
- Brian: December 9th, 1968
- Patt: February 1st, 1969
- Mikey: I think somewhere in 1970, if someone knows, please let me know.
Their debut album, Weezer (1994) , produced by Ric Ocasek, reached
the No. 16 position on Billboard's Top 200 album chart and remained on the chart for 76
weeks.
Rivers is terribly fobic for earthquakes.
Geffen signed Weezer on august 1993.
Weezer hits "Undone (The Sweater Song)" reached
No. 6 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Buddy Holly" (No. 2, Modern Rock Tracks)
and "Say It Ain't So" (No. 7, Modern Rock Tracks).
The video for "Buddy Holly" spliced Weezer
into Al's Diner on the TV show "Happy Days". Arguably one of the most popular clips of
1995, it scored four MTV Video Music awards, including Breakthrough Video and Best
Alternative Music Video, and two Billboard Music Video Awards, among them
Alternative/Modern Rock Clip of the Year.
Some Weezer records contains a name E.Smith. This is a publishing
name for Rivers.
Jamie was recorded originally april 1993 for a recording project for some students who were
taking a recording engineer class. This is the version which is found on "DGC Rarities Vol.
1".
Videos Undone - the Sweater Song and Buddy Holly are directed by Spike Jonze. There is
also videos from Say It Ain't So, El Scorcho and Good Life.
Rivers has wroten a song for Tom Jones. Rivers: "I don't know when he's going to
use it, but supposedly he really likes it". Personally I don't know what song that is, but if
someone knows - please, let me know.
Most falsettos, which took place on weezer 1st and 2nd albums, are sung by Matt.
Rivers is also an able drum player.
History of Weezer's name is suspected by most that the name is lifted
from the character "Weezer" from the show "The Little Rascals". Anyhow,
none of members won't really admit that. I think that Rivers has told that his father
gave him nickname Weezer when he was a kid.
Conversation which takes place in Undone - the Sweater Song is
made by Matt, Karl Koch (a roadie, great friend and fanclub runner of Weezer) and Mykel (R.I.P.).
Same converstation as above is recorded in garage which is same as
1st CD's inside cover photo...surprisingly video Say it ain't so is filmed at the same place.
Mykel & Carli Allan (R.I.P.) were great friends of Weezer and their co-operation
started when Mykel and Carli saw Weezer's gig July 9th 1992 at Hollywood Club Dumb. They
were really impressed. The following night they were at a birthday party for their friend Brian
Ray and at the party they recognized the guy with long hair (!) sitting there. It was Rivers
Cuomo. So, afterwards they went to see a lot of Weezer shows and met the rest of the band.
After all Mykel and Carli were running Weezer's Fanclub for example. Unluckily, Mykel, carli
and their younger sister Trista were killed July 8th in the car accident near Colorado Springs. They were on their
way from Weezer show at Denver to another show at Salt Lake City.
Originally Weezer had Jason Copper playing acoustic guitar and
lending backup vocals. Jason was replaced by Brian while Weezer was in New York
recording their first album. Jason returned to Los Angeles and released happily a daughter
instead of an album. He also founded a new bad CHOPPER ONE, which is now burried.
Matt has a band called THE RENTALS which released a nameless
album on Maveric in the summer 1996. They are recording new album "Seven more minutes"
and it's going to be released in august.
Brian has a band called SPACE TWINS which has released two 7" vinyl
singles :No Show and Osaka Aquabus on World Domination Records.
Pat's side project THE SPECIAL GOODNESS is due to release album in
1998. Karl and Pat's project is tentatively named TRACTOR HEAVEN.
Pat is married to Jen.
Rivers had in 1996 an leg operation, it was to stretch out his right leg
that has always been shorter that the other. They broke his leg and then attatched a brace
that streched his leg a little bit at a time, the length which was given was 44mm.
Pinkerton was produced by Weezer and recorded between September
1995 and June 1996 at Sound City, Rumbo Recorders and Hollywood Sound Records in Los
Angeles; Fort Apache studios in Boston; and Electric Lady Studios in New York. The album
was mixed by Jack Joseph Puig (Black Crowes, Jellyfish, Belly) and released Sept. 24th 1996.
Pinkerton is a character in a play called Madame Butterfly,
which is Rivers favorite opera. There was a litle bit of controversy when the album was
released. There is an old corporation called Pinkerton ( as in Pinkerton detective
agency) who felt Weezer was unlawfully using thier name so they sued them. They
managed to halt sales for a day. The case has since been settled with Weezer, of course,
winning.
Italian text "Dovunque al mondo lo Yankee vagabondo si gode e
traffica sprezzando i rischi. Affonda l'ancora alla ventura." around the rim of the
Pinkerton CD means "Everywhere in the world the wandering Yankee has a good time
and trades headless of the danger. He drops the anchor to the fortune".
There is a secret Weezerland map behind the black casing side of the
Pinkerton cd case. You can easily open it and take a look, although the print is kinda small.
Same map is printed onto inside cover of the vinyl (much bigger). The map includes some
notable things, for example: The Island of Mykel and Carli, The Sharpless mountain,
Weepel, Cio Cio San, U.S.S. Pinkerton and Jonas. There are also some weird phrases on
the map, fe.: "Isola della farfalla" which means "Island of the butterfly" which
actually means Japan and "Penisola di cane" which means "Peninsula of the
dog".
Album "Pinkerton" sold gold (500.000) in U.S. on february 1997.
Weezer likes Star Wars. When Weezer was intervieing for a
new guitarist (Jason Cropper left), Rivers asked Brian Bell what his favorite Star Wars action
figure was. He said Hammerhead, and that was that.
Brian saw Elvis live show at the age of four
The lead singer of LUSH admitted that a few lines of the song
"Ladykillers" were about Matt Sharp. The lines that deal with him are the ones that start with
"Blondie was with us for a month" which refers to when matt had bleached his hair, and was
touring with LUSH. Probably Mat was hitting on her, and she didn't like it.
SUBURBAN ADVANTAGE is a very rare and early solo project from
drummer Pat Wilson. Pat has since stated that the he doesn't want anyone to hear the stuff
he recorded for this.
Brian Bell had band called CARNIVAL ART before he joined Weezer.
Rivers dropped his school at Harvard at October 1997. He was
studying english and said:"I was tired of it".
Meet the Deedles Disney soundrack, which contains song:"American
girls" is recorded by project called HOMIE. Guys are:Rivers, Matt, Greg Brown
from Cake, Yuval Gabay and Sebastian Steinburg from Soul Goughing.
