Nancy and the girls have a little reunion with an old friend of theirs at one of their fave hang out spots--The Intowner. Their friend Shadette is visiting from out of town so they decide to go have a few beers with her and relax.
No sooner do they sit down with their tripple whiskey sours, than the DJ (a man of little intelligence) starts blaring the music (nothing very good either.) They try and chat over it, screaming at eachother, when the bass player from the band who will be on later comes over to schmooze! He is kind of suspicious looking and George gives Nancy that all knowing look that they know what is up his sleeve (a quick trip to the hotel upstairs maybe) but they cancel it out feeling that maybe their intuition is off after a few drinks. Mr. Bass Player coverses readily with George and Shadette then sort of sneaks of when he realises he's not going to get the attention he "deserves."
The girls go back to their drinks and conversation thinking nothing of it...George gets a wee bit tipsy after her 9 drinks but the band comes on and plays, distracting her from the naucious feeling in her stomach, or maybe adding to it, and the usually reserved girls hoot and hollar when in reality they were only intermittently watching the band and the tv screen in the distance with the Backstreet Boys on it...
A few more people roll into the bar which up until this point has been dismally empty, much to the shagrin of LaQuonda who was sure Beck was going to show up to see her incognito tonite if the crowd filled in a bit. Bess was suspiciously absent, probably at home washing her hair, as Bess is prone to doing these days, staying beautiful for her legions of men.
Nancy and George take off for the bathroom when they notice a strange man who looks really scary who just keeps circling the bar. Lap 4 is on when they return and sit down at the table to keep an eye on him. He takes a pit stop to sit on a chair and spin and then commences his rounds. Nancy and George begin to wonder if he is as harmless as he seems. Often people pretending to be drunk and harmless are the ones you should worry about.
LaQuonda distracts Shadette--who does not know of the girls' mystery solving abilities--whilst Nancy and George approach the scary plaid clad man. "Excuse me" says Nancy, "May I ask what you are drinking it looks interesting." The man looks alarmed until he notices it's just 2 attractive girls probably trying to make conversation with him. "Just a beer girls, would you like one?"
George declines feeling tipsy already and not wanting to be a drag on the man's wallet, but Nancy has her suspicions so she accepts and watches closely as the bartender places the drink on the bar infront of the scary plaid clad man. He slips something with the appearance of a white powder into the drink and slides it over to Nancy. Nancy thanks him and makes her way to washroom with the drink. She dumps most of it out and ciphons off a small portion into a vile she has in her jacket pocket. "You never know when a mystery may be at hand" she says to George.
Not to cut the evening short, but anxious to find out what this man has been sipping and trying to share with the women residents of the Intowner, Nancy makes a motion to leave after the DJ plays her song request--Limp Bizket. Ned is currently on tour with said band, as he is the man who updates their website, so Nancy listens to them any chance she gets to feel a little bit closer to Ned while he's off living his life of adventure, and she hers. Nancy goes over to the scary plaid clad man and gets his # and says she'll meet him same place, same time next week and thanks him for the drink.
The girls part with the male admirers they've seem to have attracted over the course of the evening and move on to Strawberries to discuss the case, letting Shadette in on it as she may provide a good decoy when they confront the scary plaid clad man. She will be an unfamiliar but gorgeous face for him to focus his attentions on. The girls laugh at how they were suspicious of the bass player when all the while they should have been keeping an eye on the scary plaid clad man!
After a thorough discussion and a good sobering up Shadette parts for the nite while LaQuonda, Nancy, and George head for Nancy's Lab in Paipoonge!
George and LaQuonda nap in Nancy's luxurious surroundings as Nancy does some tests on the beer she collected. After about an hour she wakes the girls with her startling results.
"Wake up, you guys" she says, shaking the girls awake.
Groggily LaQuonda and George say "What's going on, Nancy? What was in the drink?"
Nancy giggles and says, "It was only some antacids, Superstore brand Rolaids if I was to make an educated guess."
"Are you kidding?" says George. "We worried all nite over some President's Choice antacids?"
LaQuonda laughs and says, "Well, he did try and pawn off the cheap stuff on our good friend Nancy here!"
The girls have a good laugh over it and climb back into the car for the long ride home. Another crisis averted thanks to those infamous girls. The only one who loses out will be the scary plaid clad man when he notices that Nancy will not be at the bar to meet him next weekend!
Stay tuned for next week's exciting adventure as Foxy Roxy and the girls find another mystery!...
