GAMES PEOPLE PLAY
No.2: EXECUTION
Players: four to six.
Equipment: string; a black hood if available.
This game is less sinister than it sounds, for it is only the tips of the fingers that are in danger. The players sit in a circle, with the tips of their raised forefingers meeting in the centre. The executioner stands outside the circle, and should be wearing a black hood if he/she takes the game seriously. He slips a running noose made with string around the assembled fingertips and holds up the end of the string. At a certain moment he cries, 'Death!' and jerks up the string. The players whip their fingers away, but anyone whose reflexes are slow and whose finger gets caught in the noose is considered 'executed' - and can be sent off to make the coffee.
LIVE REVIEW
- Loughborough University
And so to The Three Johns. This was in some sense a secret gig for the lads, the secret being that their agents hadn't told them about it until the day before.
Nevertheless, they played a crisp set of powerful pop songs, particularly the singles; 'Death of a European' and the new one 'Brainbox - He's a brainbox'. By popular demand 'Like a Virgin' surfaced with visual gyrating of a sexuality that Madonna could only dream about.
It's often difficult to tell when the tongue is and isn't placed inside the cheek. These, however, remained minor nit-pickings among a wealth of praise to be heaped upon the Johns. Sincerity, honesty, political integrity and determination - hell, no wonder they weren't asked onto the Red Wedge tour.
