Seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion. Missed 8th in '95 by 34 points to
Jeff Gordon. Not from a lack of trying. He finished the last 10 races in 9th or
better, including two wins and three 2nds. 1979 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year.
Won Winston Cup championship following season, becoming first driver in sport's
history to win Rookie of the Year honors and Winston Cup championship in
successive seasons. First win came in 16th start, Southeastern 500 in April of
'79 at Bristol. First pole came in 24th attempt, NAPA 400 in June of '79 at
Riverside. At the end of the '95 season, he had 511 career starts, 68 wins, 20
pole positions. Has motorsports record $22,794,304 in career winnings. Won
all-time motorsports record $3,353,789 in 1993. Seven NASCAR Winston Cup
championships came in 1980, '86, '87, '90, '91, '93, '94, tying him with
Richard Petty. Motorsports Driver of the Year in 1987 and again in 1994. NMPA
Driver of the Year in 1980, '87, '90 and '94 and shared award with Tim Richmond
in '86. First three-time winner of The Winston Select ('87, '90 and '93); Won
Busch Clash five times ('80, '86, '88, '91, '93). Won 125-mile qualifier at
Daytona seven times ('83, '86, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94); Competed in 9 IROC
Series, winning IROC championship in 1990.
