This is one of my favorites. If anyone heard the Modern Rock Live version,
it was great, more mellow and acoustic than the CRASH and concert versions. I think the version on CRASH is great, even though the acoustic guitar sounds better than the electric. Of course, that is my personal opinion. Carter gets into a good groove throughout the entire song and Roi
gets to show his stuff. I like the way he switches from sax to flute to sax. That is an interesting touch. Dave hits some notes in this song that
can send chills through your body. My favorite part of the song is the soft guitar part at the end. I could listen to those few measures over and over...and then the transtion into Say Goodbye...UNBELIEVABLE, that is all there is to it.
A good song. Matt Mihalak
Awesome song. It was absolutely awesome at the 9/7 show in Atlanta.
Betsy
listening to it now to get the full effect...I like this song, its not as good as Say Goodbye but it still is pretty good. Not one of my faves...Let me just say that I love Dave and I should be at the Kalamazoo show tonight!
P! ???
What a great song! Carter really shines during this
song, as does Roi on flute. Boyd, as usual brings a
lot to the song.

I THINK THAT ALONG WITH ALL OF THEIR OTHER SONGS, THE LYRICS TO
THIS SONG ARE BEAUTIFUL AND COULD STAND ON THEIR OWN AS POETRY. I DO THINK
THAT DAVE, IN A WAY, IS REACHING OUT IN THIS SONG. HE WANTS THINGS TO BE
THE WAY THAT THEY USED TO BE. HE WANTED SUCCESS, BUT NOT IF IT ENTAILED
THE GROBBLING OVER MONEY AND ALL OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT PEOPLE FIGHT
ABOUT IN THE MUSIC WORLD. FOR HIM IT WAS JUST ABOUT THE MUSIC, AND HE
WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT (I'M GUESSING!!!). I FEEL SO SORRY FOR HIM WHEN
HE PLAYS THIS SONG AT SHOWS, AND PEOPLE ARE SINGING THE LYRICS WITH HIM,
BUT THEY'RE NOT HEARING WHAT THEY'RE SINGING. THAT'S ALL THAT I HAVE TO
SAY, EXCEPT THAT IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES!
Mike
If I had only one song to listen to for the rest of my
life, it would be #41.
It's a great song but Lie in our Graves is by far the best song
made by Dave.
"Come and see I swear by now I'm playing time against my troubles"
Overall I love all of their songs, but #41 is one of the greatest.
Also,even though I am very young,I still believe is a wonderful dreamer,who
is beautiful
at heart and physically, his songs are so meaningful to those who understand
them,like myself.
I'm very happy that this weeks song is #41,because it explains how I feel
about someone right now.
And I question them"Do they wish a dance?"
Peace,Love,and Happiness to all!
I am sooooooooo Glad #41 made it to number 1....I would say
it is in the running for a spot in the all time top 10 dmb songs!!!!
"Remember when, I used to play for all of the lonliness that nobody notices
now?"
this line has sooooo much meaning and relates to me in sooooo many ways, as
do
many other dmb lyrics but this one shines above the rest!!!!Anyone who
voted
this song in pat yourselves on the back, roll up a fatty, put #41 on
repeat, and smoke
that thing till it's gone, and sit back relax and jam for a while!!!!!!!
I think I'll go take my own advice!!!!! l8TR John Michael Diresta
#41 is a cool, relaxing song, and it serves an awesome segway
to SAY GOODBYE. It's also great live. However, it doen't hold a candle to
Pay For What You Get, which many people consider its counterpart.
Mike Kossoff
It is one hell of a good song.....brian likes it to!!@!@
Pratt Paterson
A very good song. Not too fast, not too slow. I like the
little chirping sound. If you really listen, you'll know what I'm talking
about.

Hmmmmm...just looked over the lyrics to this one...reminds me of myself
trying to forget my less than finer moments in life..."playing time against
my troubles"..."the play on time is won, but the difficulty is coming
here"..."i will go in this way and find my own way out"..."all at once the
ghosts come back"..."all the loneliness that nobady notices now"..."i
wanted to stay, i wanted to play, i wanted to love you"..."i'm only this
far, and only tomorrow leads the way".....
Musically speaking - Roi's sax sounds so sweet the intense communication
between Carter and David comes thru very nicely on this - listen to how the
percussive guitar and drums fit together...
My roommate gives this song "2 thumbs up", whatever that's worth.....
This is a good song as most will agree. But all of the DMB's songs are good.
I like this song, don't get me wrong, but this song doesn't really DO IT for me
like other songs by Dave. "Ants Marching", now that's a song if I've ever heard
one. "#41" is a good song and I wouldn't change it if it came on but it doesn't
get heart pumping like some other DMB songs. The real bad-ass thing about "#41" is
how it leads into "Say Goodbye". That part is fucking bad-ass!!!
Jenny Patrny
Awesome song..probably one of my favorites...gives me
goosebumps when I hear it....wow! Stephanie
Beginning puts you into a dramy twilight state, so that it feels as if he
is right in front of you singing.
The music works itself up into a climax bursting with fruit flavor. *Tiara*
I had more to say. I agree with Mike. Also, the flute
is my instrument (I've been playing for 6 years.) When
I learn to play this I'll be the happiest girl in the
world! Don't the lyrics speak for everyone? Yes, if I
could listen to just one song for all of eternity. it
would be #41
Jennifer
#41 is so powerful, I am glad there is no title to it.
None could give it justice. It so sad you just want
to go tell Dave everything will be fine. So often, Dave's
songs are sung and adored and unless you really listen
to the lyrics, you would have no idea how really
wonderful it is. The line about "..I'm coming slow
but speeding" is one of the best sung lines in the song.
But the song is laced with wonderful lines, each one
touching your heart. I agree with everyone on the
comment board. Musically, you could listen to this
song a hundred times in a row and hear something
different each time. Everything is perfect even the
sadness. This song is so me, sad isn't it? *Tiara*
This is probably my favorite DMB song. It's so
sensuous and beautiful. I listen to a live version and the
Crash version no less than ten times a day.
"Why won't you ever be glad, it melts into wonder.."
Yeah, I heard them on MRL too. I also read the Rolling Stone
Stone interview. Even though this song may not be
about wanting and longing to Dave, it is to me.
I love #41 live when Boyd goes into his little solo
frenzy and it has an upbeat rhythm because Stefan's
bass can clearly be heard bouncing up and down!
Right now i think it is my favorite dave song. they all really
gel together and jam it well. Icant say enough about it. when they slow it
down a bit in concert it also sounds great.
This song just makes sense, and even if you listen to
41 times, it sounds just as good.
Come see, I swear by now I'm playing time against my...
Dave's words fit me so well, I feel a bond... definite
bond everytime I listen to him, see him on Mtv, go
to his shows, I just want a backstage pass to smoke
a jimi thing, is that Too Much to ask?
Hey....it's by Dave Matthews Band...that's all that has to be
said. It doesn't get any better than this!!!
#41 isn't my favorite DMB song, its not even off my
favorite DMB album, but sometimes, I'll just be sitting
there and I'll just ffel like listening to #41. Not
Any DMB song, specifically #41. Expecailly in Geometry,
Is that weird? Oh yeah, DMB started the only concert of
them I've ever been to w/#41, too. Ok, bye! Andy "Tallboy" Jacobsen
bad fuckin' ass Rob Potanovich
this is an incredible song. First time i heard it I was at the
Amherst D&T show. It just keeps getting better and better. The version
that i saw at MSG on Oct 4th was out of this world. It has become one of
my altime favorite DMB songs. There is just something special about this
song, but i can't really describe it Sio
I do love this song, and it was awesome that it was the first
song that Dave played at my first DMB concert at MSG! That's all I really
have to say...not too intelligent, eh?
