Say Goodbye

(January 15-25)

"So you're stuck in a room with somebody that you know really well but your just friends...and you happen to find each other kind of exciting...and your trying to convince your friend that maybe if you screw around just that one time..And when you wake up in the morning everything will be the same is kind of hopeful, but uh...this song is about that. This is called Say Goodbye."

Proudest Monkey's Review

I have always loved this song. It has so much emotion in it. Even though it is about a one-night stand, the lyrics themselves can be seen as very romantic. I like the way Dave changes the lyrics every time he sings this song. This unpredictability keeps the song fresh and exciting every time you hear it. Carter is great, especially on CRASH when he has the solo from the transition between #41 and Say Goodbye. Boyd has a straight part...some simple long tones...but without them the song would not be the same. You could a good idea of the range of Dave's voice on this song...sometimes he can hit the high notes and at others it is a little shaky. But anyway...this is a wonderful song. TIP: Don't listen to it when your depressed: It doesn't help too much.

i absoloutly love say goodbye. When i first heard it on crash i was kind of looking for the old lyrics to "quick lay and say goodbye" i originally liked all the other versions before but now the version on the crash cd is the best!!!! but i still love it when dave changes around the lyrics like every fucking time he plays it, that takes some talent

Just me

This song is so romantic, you can't help but be swept away by it. The music is very powerful, and the emotion just pores out. I don't have a favorite but I play this one quite a bit. The way #41 seeps into it just keeps the emotion flowing from it into Say Goodbye. I could write forever about this. It is so passionate, just sit back, relax, and close your eyes.

Yes!!!! I am so excited to finally see this song here! Say Goodbye is tied with Granny as my second fav song, after Warehouse. It's just such a great song, not because of ther suggestive lyrics, but just the way it progresses. It starts off with that killer intro, then gets kinda calm, and anyone who isn't singing along by the end of the song is mentally insane. It gets you going, and it's the only song on Crash where TIM's gutitar isn't out of place. The song rules, it's amazing, it's just so DMB, it should be their most popular song. If you've ever had any doubt as to whether or not Boyd, Sefan, Carter Leroi and Dave are musical geniuses or not, just listen to SAY GOODBYE. THIS SONG RULES!!!!

As a song this is a very good song with good percussion and guitar . I expesially like LErois opening solo. The Lyrics are something that i can sympathise with.

This song is romantic, but not overly obsessive like other songs tend to be (by other artists). Also, is seems to flow a little better than a few of their other songs. Overall, I like it (of course, what DMB song DON'T I like?) and it has a happy-warm-nice-good feeling to it.

This is an incredible song, expecailly the intro. Furthermore,It is killing me now, because I have a HUGE crush on my best friend!

I've been in this situation the song talks about many times before I first heard the song. So now when i get myself in that situation i play the song at that moment and my thoughts are answered. Thanx Dave!

Funny, isn't it, how we find one night stands so horrible, but Mr. Matthews seems to turn it into a beautiful, romantic song you can put on repeat? Anyway, when I got this album over the summer, Say Goodbye was the first to be on repeat -- all the time. It was my first favorite DMB song. Anyway, I just saw the rendition of it on "Crashing the Quarter" and man, it was awesome! And, hey, what girl wouldn't love Dave singing this to her?!

i imagine a night of excitement and desire...wanting someone so bad and knowing that they feel the same way. it would be a night that would stay with you forever and nothing would ever be able to replace that memory. the song completely excites me and i dream about a night like that.

The first time that I heard this song was about two years ago on a mix my friend had. The song was so new then that before it Dave says, "This next song doesn't have a name yet so I'll call it newish." I loved how raw and emotional it was. I didn't like what they did to it on Crash, but that was my opinion of most of the songs, since I had heardmost of them on bootlegs. Anyways it's a great song.

It is of course a wonderful song, but my favourites on the album are number 1,2 and 4. but of course all the songs gets better the more you listen to them.

I find "Say Goodbye" to be one of many Dave Matthews' lyrical masterpeices. I love how the lyrics and music constsntly build throughout the song, just as the relationship between the two friends would, until finally it climaxes then immediatly falls at the end. *SIGH* I also love Boyd's solo at "Here me call...". It reminds of a violinist who would come and play at a couple's dinner table to add to the romance of the evening. Dave's poetic and heart-felt lyrics make this song.

Mike Namisnak, mpnst3@pitt.edu

I love the emotion of the song. As the lyrics get more intense so does the music and his singing. It is anologous to how a special night with that special friend could develope.
