Proudest Monkey's Review
The first time I heard this song was in December of 1995, about five months before CRASH came out. I really didn't like it that much to tell the truth. The version I heard was kind of boring...it had Boyd's plucking but not the cool bass parts and little things Dave does with his voice. The version on Crash is good..not the best I've heard..but it is exciting and has a good feel to it. I don't like the electric guitar, but besides that it is good. The song is a great one...even though it can be totally different every time you hear it. At the Madison show I went to...it was great....very emotional and exciting at the same time.

This is my favorite song on the Crash album. It is one of the most meaningful songs on the album.

Fantasitc song, great with the band and solo with tim. The lyrics, the meanings. Gives you a good, jumpy, live life feeling.

It's it, and that's that. What can I say about this undescribable song? It combines all of their best features to produce an exhilerating, if freaky, final product. But, of course, Two Step is a live song in every sense of the word. Nothing compares to hearing those first few plucks at a show, whether you're there, or if it's on a bootleg. HOWEVER, I feel forced to comment on the tragic untimelyness of the lyrics, "So celebrate we will, 'cause life is short but sweet for certain." With the sorrowful passing of Aslan, one can wonder if Stefan will ever want to hear these lyrics again.

I'd say that Two Step is a good song. Don't get me wrong it's a great song, but all of their songs are great!!!!!!! This song, in my opinion, isn't by their musical standards one of the band's best. I'll admit I haven't been a BIG fan for long. When their promotion became national with UTTAD is when I first paid any attension to them. But it took awhile for their music style to settle with me. What Would You Say and Ants Marching were the two songs that influenced me to buy UTTAD, but I rarely listened. Just recently (no pun intended I assure you) a friend of mine became intrested in the band. As his interest grew mine did as well. This was about a year after UTTAD came out. So I dug my C.D. out and actually listened to it carefully. I found myself listening over and over. It was addicting!!! Well, my friend ended up buying tickets to the 10/24/96 in Austin TX. Oh yeah did I mention they were front row!!!!!!!! Well he let me know about the concert 2 days in advance. So I franticlly packed all the DMB music I could fit onto one tape and listened to it constantly before the concert. I didn't want to go to the concert without hearing the Crash album at all. Well it didn't help! I still find myself saying "Hey that's that one song that they did at the concert," instead of saying that song is from Crash. Well my point is that Two Step is one of those songs I refer to as concert songs. I am proud to say that I own all four DMB albums now and am an avid fan!! Wow I kinda went on and on didn't I??!!! Well if you read this entire thing I THANK YOU and if not oh well Later!! p.s. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND RULES p.p.s Hey Jason if you read this GYST.

this is truly dave and the boys at their finest... i have a version of this song with a piano added in (older stuff - Peter???) and it always reminds me of my favorite led zepplin song, "fool in the rain"... i don't really know what the story behind the song... but after seeing them play it at both Dec. 29th shows in 1995 and 1996...the song easily fits in soul of Matthews songs for these guys and brings about an aire of spirit to a crowd of thousands as well as an audience of one...
